Topic: Ideal Stand Height?     Posted: December 28 2015 at 11:20am |

Over the next few weeks I am going to be building a stand for my 65 gal (36" wide 18" deep 24" tall). I'm not sure on how tall I want to build it, but I'd prefer it be at a height where I can stand and look at it without having to bend over.
What do you feel is the ideal height for a stand?

I would have to measure for sure but on my 180 I had Dion build it about 4" higher then usually.  I am guessing 40".  It's awesome, you can get a perfect standing view (it is the same height as yours).
Con to that is cleaning.  You will need a ladder!  I find you look more then you clean so nice trade off.

Standard pre-built stands are usually 30-32" tall. I assume the manufacturers chose this height so that you don't need a step stool to reach in to clean the tank. I've seen a few of the tall stands (built purposely tall to go behind a couch or behind a railing) in the 40-45" tall range. Look at how tall you would see the tank at eye level, and subtract the height of the tank. That should give you good idea of how tall you should build stand.

If you truly want it so you don't have to bend over then measure from the floor to your eyes and then subtract 9" (half the height of the tank) that way the center of the tank is at eye level. This usually makes for a very tall stand but will give you a starting point. Then you can subtract more inches until you find what you are looking for.

Jdinchak, 40" is the height I've been thinking of going with. If feels like a good viewing height, but won't feel too tall. I think that's what my old 125 gal was at...
I'm wondering if it will feel too tall though, since the tank is only 3 ft instead of 6 ft.

That may just depend on the space for it.  My 180 is in about a 9 foot alcove, and centered so if fits right in.

I think mine is going to be at the bottom of my stairs when you walk into the family room, kind of at the back of the landing, by itself.
  Where's Dion? He knows everything...

Just measured the top on the 120 stand. 40.5 inches from the floor. I wouldn't go any higher for me, hard to reach the bottom with it this tall, but it sure looks nice that high.

Where does the concern of the tank being top heavy come in?

Adam | I'm happy we can agree that 40" is a good height since I'm like 2 months into building the stand Tim's 65 Gal Build Thread
