Well, I can't see the kalk causing this problem. I think the culprit lies somewhere else. We must not be asking the right questions .

kalk would lower your ph. Right

Kalk has a pH raising effect generally speaking. In some tanks it doesn't have any effect (or so I'm told). In all my times using it, it's increased my average pH. Full strengh kalk has a pH close to 12. The alkalinity portion of kalk is OH- (read: high pH). This OH then reacts with dissolved CO2 to form the carbonates that we want:

OH + CO2 -> HCO3 and eventually H + CO3
