Good question.
I believe they can reach 12" from tip to tip. Considering this and the speed of growth I have observed in a large tank before they ate all the available food, my guesstimate of lifespan is around 10+ years, though it could be longer.

Here is a good read by a noted authority.

It seems to me there has been little advancement in our knowledge of Sea Stars since 2002 when this article was written. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Toonen has since become more conservative in his viewpoint regarding the Linckia Stars.

I too had a Blue Linckia arm that lived for 6 months after the rest of the Star had died early.

Aloha,

Just thought I'd pitch in here, there's a great hobbyist up here in our neck of the woods that had had a blue linckia for a number of years (I want to say 5+, I know his tank is 10+ years old). It is a 300 gallon tank, but the reason I wanted to  post is that he has witnessed the linckia eating asterina stars in his tank a number of times. I don't know if this is their native diet, or if this is something that the star has adapted to do to survive, but it is working well for him!

Maybe that is the reason why mine has done so well. Now that you mention it I use to have a lot of those asterina stars and not really anymore.
