I bought a new tank and I have a question that I am sure someone will know. When I turn of the pump in my sump, water keeps coming into it. The overflow that I have does not just flow over on the top. It also flows in through an area about 3/4 of the way up. I was wondering if anyone else has an overflow like this and what did you, or do you do to make sure it does not just keep on filling up your sump and eventually start overflowing the sump? I appreciate your help if you can help me.

Thanks everyone,

The water isn't coming through the overflow. It's coming through the pump. Water siphons back through your return line until the siphon is broken by air. You can place the return lines closer to the water surface to minimize the back siphon of water. Some people will also drill a small hole into the top of their return lines for a faster siphon break.

If it's a commercial overflow then those slits 3/4 of the way up don't dump into the overflow. They have another panel inside of that. I'm not sure why they do that ... water flow or something. They also have one about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom in bigger tanks.

I think the best thing to do is to use a durso pipe heading down to the sump.  Then all the water in the overflow doesn't have to drain, it just has to drop to the durso intake and then it's done.

The comment about the water coming back through the pump is true, also.  I had that issue and solved it with backflow preventers.  They let the water go up to the tank but when the flow reverses the lid flops down and seals off the line.   Mine are see-through so you can easily see if they are working.
