Topic: Emerald Crab vs Bubble Algae? Posted: August 11 2004 at 6:27pm |
I recently purchased a lovely mushroom rock from a local LFS. I normally am very concerned about what goes into my tank so I look over the addition well. On this particular rock, some Valonia spp. (bubble algae) has appeared. Has anyone had success with Mithrax sculptus (Emerald Crab) eating and controlling this type of algae?

I had some Valonia when I first started my tank. I put in a couple Mithrax crabs and the Valonia was gone within a week.

Thanks for the replies. Initially I had a Emerald Crab and he seemed happy. But I have not seen him for a few months and I wonder if he died from starvation. He/she would come out to devour the shrimp pellets I would drop. But I decided that the shrimp pellets were putting too much into the water and I stopped feeding with them except on a rare occasion. I didn't have bubble algae before so maybe he ate whatever there may have been there, if any. My tank is small and I try not to overfeed in order to keep the water prams decent and the algae checked.

I have had mithrax crabs eat all of my bubble algae within a couple weeks. Therefore, I would recommend you do NOT by one of those crabs. Otherwise, you will never get valonia to grow in your tank.

I'm with Adam. I like a little Valonia in my tank. I have a patch in my tank that has about 20 micro serpent stars living in it.

I recently put a rock with Valonia in my tank and was worried that it
would grow too quickly, but within a couple of hours my yellow tang had
it all cleaned up. He was happy. I can't grow any kind of
macro in the tank itself since the tangs just clean it up on
contact. I do grow it in my refugium.

some bubble algaes seem to grow a lot quicker and spread faster than others. I don't mind a couple patches here or there, but it's not something I'd want to get out of control in my tank. I just bought an emerald to help keep it in check.
