Topic: Can my tank do well without snails Posted: May 13 2004 at 8:09am |
I hate snails.. .... they are either on their backs waiting to be flipped OR pushing all my coral off a ledge.... They are like bulldosers in my tank huge peices are alway moved.. I have 25 to 40 hermits that I love. Can I ditch the snails without adverse reactions to my tanks health??? |

I don't know that it would compromise the health of your tank, but I would very likely compromise the aesthetic appeal. Perhaps you can try different types of snails.
Mexican Turbos are infamous for getting very large and knocking things around, but are great algea eaters. Just keep your corals in mind if you have them.
Astreas are small, but spend lots of time eating and are very beneficial IMO.
Margaritas are the least hardy IME. And classic for falling on their backs and becoming hermit crab treats. Also temperate water snails.
Ceriths are wonderful sandbed cleaners, although mine tend to spend most of their time mating and laying eggs. I only have 5 of them, but get at least 3 new batches of eggs every week.
Fighting conches or Queen conches are great at cleaning slime algeas and cyano from the sand. Well worth the extra $.
Hermits are omnivores, but seem to prefer meaty treats. I doubt they will keep your algeas under control. If you figure out a way to go snail free, let us know. Best of luck to you!

How large are your snails? I have the opposite problem in my nano tank, the hermits tend to knock my corals over. As Jamison said, I would try some smaller varieties. Maybe some bumble bees, or small astreas. I know the astreas can get large, but maybe you could work out an exchange with the LFS when they get too big for your liking.

good advise.... other then you jfinch I cant seem to get that glueing thing down...While Im on the topic, what glue do you use??
I do have all sizes of snails and think that going with smaller might be my best bet... Anyone want to trade some med for some small???? Mine really are not that big. I would consider all but maybe three to be medium... I will try the smaller one to see if that helps.... |

Connie, I've run my 75 gallon tank for the last 2 years with only about 3 Astreas and 7-10 hermits. A heater break killed them all off and I never replaced until about two weeks ago (I added 20). My tank has been in great shape without them but I'll admit it's nice to not scrape off the glass off as often now...

Connie,
Gel super glue and underwater epoxy. But honestly, I don't like gluing some corals either.

You need to buy from a hobby store or woodworking store. I've bought from Woodcraft (in midvale) and Timberline Supply (in Orem). It's about $10 for a very large bottle. One bottle will last forever if you can keep the tip clear.

I take it that since Mark has not posted here he must have had a heart attack when he saw the original post. RIP Mark.
Connie, how big do you consider to be medium. I would love to take some larger snails off you hands anytime. Where are you located? I could pay for them, trade smaller ones for them or trade coral frags for them.
I have had all kinds of algae problems in one of my tanks since loosing all but 2 of my snails. The lack of snails hadn't even crossed my mind for some reason, but after mentioning it to Mark he automatically said "You have no snails." DUHHH!!! Come to think of it I didn't have so much trouble when I had 200 snails in there. Now I have 4.
I've noticed that it is the larger hermits in my tanks that cause problems.

Definately glue down your coral. Not glueing has been the leading cause of decay of stony polyp corals in our tank.
Also about snails... not all snail are algae eaters some eat ditritus. I believe that bumble-bee snail are an example of not-algae-eaters. Do your research.
As for flipping over snails.... I have solved that problem. Any snails that fall and land upside down in our tank become puffer fish food before the next morning.

What else ate the algae? fish, grammerus, I know you have some hair algae. We saw the Yellow Tang eating it in the bucket during the move.
Will, That was a bad one. One more of those and I'll be a gonner for sure

Mark- The Tang doesn't touch the bits for hair I have (I wish he did). I think we saw him picking at some stringy type of macro algae that was uncovered during the move (not the Bryopsis or Derbesia I have on a few rocks)...

Jared- Why did not glueing have an effect on health? Did they float off.... I thought it was better to shove in a hole and wait for them to encrust and grow??
Wsinbad1- I pulled about 12 last night & put them in my ref... I would love to trade for some smaller ones. I would say mine are from 3 to 5 inches at the base.. I think there all astaria (sp) I really dont know the name.. it statred with an A.....I am at 6200 s & 6200 west... If you dont have any smaller to trade, Ill just give them to you....
& yes, I do scare myself too??? How someone so clueless has done it for this long is a mistery even to me... OOOOO look at the purdy fishies... |

I agree Mark. I acutally added 20 snails just a couple of weeks ago before I moved the tank. I wouldn't mind doubling the snail and hermit-crab count. This is what I've kept telling myself for the last two years...

Connie, In my (brief) experience. Any sps that is not securely glued down will get bumped and moved and dropped of a precipice and fall into shadow and doom.
Falling into dark chasms is very bad for their health. That is what I ment. Also, it seems to me that just falling down and lying on the sand for half a day every few weeks will cause them to die off. In our tank, the only sps that has ever stayed in one place long enough to encrust its base has been a glued down one.
Now softies are another story. I am sold on stitching them to the rock. I have had more success with that than any other method.

I would have to say I agree.... I am no longer getting the smaller ones for this very reason. Even if I do glue them they are so small they are still ran over and fall to the bottom. You pay more but in the long run its worth every dime if you still have them in a month... Off topic.. I cant wait to show you the pics I took of the ricorda frag I got from you.. Little bugger. floated off once put him back and then he disappeared for a month... Then he started to come out and then gone... Well two weeks ago he emerged from a new hole right above the other two I have. He travled thru the rock to be by his friends.. SO COOL... Anyway, it is now the size of a silver dollar... Thanks again for the trade.... |
