I've been looking around and am amazed at the prices of some of these things.  $1500 for a tiny little frag?  What makes these so expensive?  Are they hybrids or something?

This is just an example, but there are tons of threads like this.

Those are actually chalices, They are expensive because they are rare and look at the colors, they are stunning!

the colors are definitely incredible.

Corals are confusing my feeble mind.

I admit I want some of those chalices though.

it takes time to learn about coral, but it is a fascinating subject to study. Yeah if i had a few thousand laying around i wouldn't mind some of those chalices also. However there are other chalices that have pretty amazing color that are quite affordable.

After a few years of collecting and being familiar with most or all of the chalice names I might sell a few and buy a nice ultra rare peice. I think those $1500 pieces are for people who just don't get the same feelings they use to looking at a coral they have seem a thousands of times and in everyone's tank. As an exame when I was a newbie I would get excited to see plain old mushrooms and other simple corals and now you couldn't pay me to have them take up precious real estate in my tanks.
