Topic: Acropora crabs Posted: November 13 2004 at 2:00pm |
I purchased the base of an acro that was fragged at the last meeting. It had a crab come with it. It was not hairy but is brown in color. I believe it is probably harmless. The problem is the acro has now fully RTNed. Should I move this crab to another acro or should I remove him from the tank?

I think he will move on his own, right? You may as well leave the acro alone, sometimes they surprise you & come back when you least expect it. I love acro crabs - I envy you having him! Okay, I've got a few. They are so cool.

Tissue death - RTN - Rapid Tissue Necrosis
It's where the tissue turns white, rapidly recedes and dies off.

Rapid Tissue Necrosis, all the 'flesh' just peels off or disappears within a matter of days or even hours from the coral.

The crabs tend to be a Trapezia spp. if they're not hairy... is there a black(dark) line that extends from eye to eye? They're ok, IMO. You already got a good idea of what RTN is.

Just got my first taste of that, my purple acro from the last meeting was doing great. Then I come home today....only one piece of flesh left on one tip, rest GONE.
Only thing I did different was dosing my tank this morning with calcium/alk, but I've done that a couple times since I got it.

Well, I guess I'm keeping the crab. He moved out of the dead coral but I have no idea where he went.
