We're building up our cleaning crew and currently we have 6 snails (One is a sand digger named powder lol So he's not on the glass.)

I was just wondering how many snails I can add at any one time and how frequently until I get up to the total amount ideal for a 24 gal nano.

Also, if this is the proper place, I would like the same bit of information including the ideal numbers for hermit crabs - 5 or 6 currently, I can't remember. (Let's see.. Barnacle Bill, Barnacle Bill Jr., Gilligan and a few undiscernables.)

I would go with a dozen snails (some people prefer more) and 6 small hermits. Some people don't use hermit crabs. I find them interesting to watch and stick with the small blue-legs.

I would recommend around 10 or so snails, and 4-6 crabs.  If you get to many they could starve. depending on the type of snail, most live anywhere from 30 to 100 years in the wild. most common types of death to snails and crabs in aquariums are starvation and predation. You will loose a few regardless however.  Just try and limit how many.

As far as names go. Sebastian was the hermit crab in Little Mermaid and Crusty was the hermit crab in Mr. Limpet.

I set up a 45 gallon about 4 years ago and added around 16 snails and 10 crabs.  I thinking there are probably around 12 snails and 6 crabs left and no sign of algae. Except for the hard pink stuff that is a pain to scrape off the glass Big%20smile

Squiboy, MagScrapers work great to clean  the  coraline algae off the glass. That's what I use.

Well the largest of the snails is now officially named hefalump (Or however you spell it lol)
My boyfriend thinks I'm a dork for naming everything in the tank : ) I know he likes it.
So we're at 6 hermit crabs, putting a stop to it for the crustations but we still need more snails. I think we'll get one more sand digging snail and four more normal ones. Hee hee. Can I add the five or six snails all at once or should I add them three at a time? Or does it really matter?
