I just purchased a sally lightfoot crab on friday. And just now I was lookin into my tank and saw my shrimp chowing down on my new crab.. Looks like I was to late to save him..

Is this common?
I dont recall what my shrimp is.. Other then he is white with red stripes. Banded something or another. lol

Still new at this.. tank has been setup sense last christmas.. I had also had a emerald crab for many months and notice he was gone this week as well. Thats why I got the new crab..  I Have had the shrimp for about 7 months now

Thanks
Jason

Well it is a banded shrimp. I was thinking of a cleaner shrimp. If you arent feeding your tank enough then this guy might get a bit aggressive. How is your snail and hermit crab population doing. Are they dwindling as well?

You know the snail pop is pretty low.. I have 3.. and thats the most I have had.. So they seem to be doing fine. But,, I have noticed my hermit crabs population shrinkin..

SO what should I feed this guy to keep him from being so agressive? I have been feeding with flake food and twice a week I put in frozen stuff some times its green and others its red also has brine its some sort of combo deal...

#3 for fish LOL

I used to have some really small pellets that seemed to fall to the bottem. Maybe thats whats causing the issue.. I ran out of that about 3 months ago.. It came with my tank in the kit.. Any suggestions on a good food?

Thanks

You should feed more. IMO. I feed a mixture of frozen every day. Something else to check for would be a rock crab. If youve never had more than 3 snails then thats probably not it. If the shrimp is hungry it might be turning to anything it can catch. That would include your hermits and snails.

Tell me more about the rock crab? Are you suggesting I get one? or that I may have one. I keep my eye on my tank ALOT!! and I am pretty sure I dont have a extra crab that i havent seen. I do have a few bristle worms. I wish the banded shrimp would eat them.. I have been told he would.

Thanks
Jason

You definatly do not want one. I tore a tank completly down to get one out. They kill your hermits, snails and in my case my prized manderan. They usually are brown in color, They can be red as well. Usually they hide very well and you only notice them by chance.

Yeh that's what I feed him.  I know his usual hang out and I take some in the turkey baster ($1.00 @ Walmart) and I shot some in that direction and you can see a red flash scurring around.

And then I feed the rest to the clown & Wallace. . . no biggie really.

Are you sure your sally light foot is dead?  It may have just molted.

IMHO your sally light foot is much to fast to be caught by your shrimp.  Either he molted or died and the shrimp is just cleaning up (as was mentioned above).

Ya I am sure it was the shrimp as when I first caught him the crab was still semi alive.. There was nothing I could do to keep him alive.. 4 legs had already been eaten/torn off and the back of his head was exposed.
As far as bbs and mysis what is that? I havent heard/used it.
Thanks

I'd bet the Sally Lightfoot was already dying, maybe even before you bought it.  I agree with Jake a health Sally Lightfoot should easily be able to evade a Coral Banded Shrimp.  I would think the Sally might attack and eat the Shrimp rather than the other way around.
