Topic: Rock Crab Posted: September 23 2008 at 10:51pm |
I think I have a rock crab that keeps eating my fish. What is the best way to get rid of him?

How do you know it is eating your fish? Have you had fish die for no reason? Are their tails weathered like an old flag?

You can tip a small jar against the rockwork and put some food in it. When the rockcrab goes for the food he will slip to the bottom of the jar and be unable to climb out. The jar should be big enough for the crab and small enough that the fish don't eat all of the food.

Have you seen it catch your fish? This would surprise me. Normally, people have problems with them eating other crabs and snails. I've used Mike's suggest method to lure and trap an unwanted crab. I used a pint jar (glass) - it worked overnight.
Good luck.

My wife saw a "crab without a shell" grab Dori during the evening while she was laying rock (I have a 29 gallon bio). I can only guess that that is the reason. The tank has been up for a year and I have had the same Clown and a cleaner shrimp since the tank was established. Everytime I try and add new fish they completely disapear within a couple of days. I can only assume that the clown fish survives because it lives in the anemeone and the cleaner shrimp is big. I will try Mike's suggestion tonight. Otherwise, I do not know what else might be killing the other fish.

Tangs can be aggressive and tight quarters make animals more aggressive than normal. Maybe your established fish are killing the new fish?

I did not see the rock crab. My wife described it as a flat crab with large front claws and because it lives in the rock, it's called a rock crab.

Are your fish disappearing or are you finding them dead and beat up?

I purchased a blue tang and clown on Saturday. I only found the skeletal remains of the clown (he had not yet taken to the anemone). Jen was just lucky to catch the crab eating the blue tang. I do not know if he was dead before or after the crab.
