I have a friend who has a 39 gallon tank that everytime she adds hermit crabs to it they all die/or get killed. Whatever the cause is it does not affect snails, all the snails are fine. She has not noticed anything eating them, and suspects a rock crab, but hasn't seen one. Does anyone have any ideas that might help her out?

Mantis or Rock Crab would be my guess. Both are hard to see and catch. (Or poor supply of crabs)

I've heard of this with alkalinity problems (often times too high???), so I'm told.

If the shells end up in one pile then it is definitely a Rock Crab, but if not...

Like Adam said, first check Alk and Ca, because each organism responds differently to low or high levels.

Next we would need to know how many she adds, how long they live and does she see any remains?

FYI, rock crabs love snails so if her snail population is okay then it's most likely not a RC.

What fish are in this tank? There's also a possibility.
