Topic: Now thats what I call high quality H2O Posted: June 10 2004 at 7:51am |
"Waterboy", 1998.
Anyways, I was trying to think of a catchy Subject Title and that's the best I could come up with. Sorry.
I picked up a couple of corals from a member yesterday. One of the rocks had a Majano Anemone on it that I really didn't want in my tank. After a couple of phone calls to some reliable resources (thanks Mark and Jon) I set out to find a baggy of white powder and a syringe. That would be pickling lime BTW. Tried Albertsons, nope (although the Pharmacist did let me buy the syringe after a rather awkward explanation of why I needed it). Smiths, nope. Bowmans, nope. But, I could ensure that the Majano kept it's color with enough pectin to supply the world for a year.
So, exhausted in my search, I decided to try the really, really hot water injection trick. It's pretty hard to get boiling water into a syringe. I had the specimen in a tupperware next to the stove and injected it several times with the really, really hot water. It shrunk up pretty quick and let loose with a bunch of white goo. At that point, I figured that was the best I could do.
Well, I placed the rock into the tank and as usual my peppermint shrimp started cleaning my hands. But then something strange happened, they jumped onto the rock and started picking off the Majano Anemone! And I thought that they only liked Aiptasia! They worked that little bugger over for a good to minutes ripping it off of the rock and eating it! How ! Peppermints ROCK!

Hmmm. Our peppermints don't do anything with our majano. Maybe they only like them cooked.
I'd like to try that hot water trick. Do you use a hypodermic needle to inject the water or just shoot the hot water at it? Is there any risk of cracking the syringe or hypodermic with hot and cold water contanct?

Peppermints will eat almost anything that is dying.
Corals, anemones, clams, etc.

I agree with Jake. Also, they'll eat stuff that is living (like my yellow polyps and my anthelia).

Very true.
I believe that they pick at most small polyps.
That is why I call them "semi-reef safe".

Hypodermic. $.50 at Albertsons. Just be prepared to get a really weird look from the Pharmacist. Boil the water and have the anemone nearby. I think that the reason I might have worked for me is because the water was just short of simmering. The syringe withstood the hot water just fine.
I had read of doing this for Aiptatia Anemones and figured that it might work for the Majano as well. I guess I will never know unless there's more on the other corals I got from the same tank, or unless the peppermints pass the anemones...

Boiled, broiled, baked or just sauteed? It's dinner!

Glad to hear it worked for you.
Boiling water can be used if you take your syringe remove the metal needle and replace with the plastic cap. Remove the piston. Fill with water and set in a glass so it stays upright. Microwave until it boils. Quickly reassemble the syringe and inject. It should work, but it's never worked for me, I always burn myself .

Ah, so that's how you do it! I won't describe how I was trying to do it!
Actually, I just boiled in a tea kettle til it whistled at me, poured into a cup and sucked it up into the needle. I figured that if water just short of boiling can cause 2nd and 3rd degree burns on human skin (from experience) then it should really tear up that soft bodied little pest!
Thanks again for your help!

Just in case someone doesn't know, Pickling Lime is Calcium Hydroxide. Calcium Hydroxide is the stuff that makes Kalkwasser. Most LFS carry it, just look for Kalkwasser powder. Also Chemical stores like the Chem Shop in Centerville, just north of MSM also carry it.

Maceys also carries pickling lime, at least the one in Pleasant Grove does. I didn't have any luck with Albertsons or Smiths.

Connie, good luck with that, let me know how it works for you.
An update on my AWSOME PEPPERMINTs! Well, at least one of them is a moron. When I was gluing down a frag today, one snuck up on me and picked off some of the superglue. Duh! Now the poor little idiot has both of his feeder legs covered in superglue. Bless his little guts, he's trying his darndest to get it off... wonder what it tastes like to a shrimp? Well, I guess it'll keep him occupied for a few days.
