Topic: Do palys poop? Posted: October 26 2011 at 1:31pm |
One of my paly frags started releasing a stringy brown thing from their mouths. All three polyps were doing the same thing. Took about 15 mins for them to each release a 1/2cm stringy "poop-like" thing.
Anyone ever seen this before?

Mine do it almost every day. I just went and found one and took a pic just now. Hard to see but that one in the middle has that dark line right above it, thats it.

Corals have a digestive system where their mouth is pretty much their anus too (one reason I'm glad to not be a coral). Corals can't digest 100% of matter that they take in, so they expel the waste. However, corals can expel their symbiotic zooxanthallae under stressful situations. 99% of the time, a coral releasing poo-like stuff is fine, but that other 1% of the time may mean the corals are stressed. I always tell everyone to keep an eye on their corals if they start looking bleached...then it wasn't typical poo.
