Let me add to answer Mark's question....

Water surface interaction may not be very important at all.... in the natural systems.  But in our tanks, we have a heavy overload of biomass, and very little water motion.  So for our aquariums I think surface water movement is crucial to tank health.  This is one area where we don't want to replicate the ocean, we want to do better.

Wow.
Thank you gentlemen.

So CO2 is less than 1% of the air we breath yet it is 25 times more soluable in water than O2!

So what is the percentage of N2, O2 and CO2 in deeper stagnant water vs agitated surface water?
And how are the ratios/amounts of CO2 and O2 critical to invert and fish respiration?

I was just thinking about the movie Star Wars I, when the two Jedi put some gadgets in their mouths and go swimming down to the underwater city. In real life, fish gills with 3 or 4 layers on each side have a lot of surface area. A sufficient amount of breathable gas could not be collected from the small amount of water passing by those little Jedi gadgets!
Unless the gadget broke up the H2O molecule....

Fish gills are so efficient it is unreal.  I could explain the whole process of Countercurrent Gas Exchange, but just by the name of it I bet everyone has already tuned out this post.  Needless to say that fish gills are far superior to human lungs.  We breath in 21% O2 and breath out 16% O2.  They breath in water and breath out water (more or less).  To answer Mark's other question, there is certainly more O2 in the upper water column, but there is also more organisms using that O2.  There is less O2 in deeper water, but I don't believe it hinders the respiration of any fish.  There are greater problems to face at depth besides O2 concentrations.

Adam, I have to dissagree with you about the water surface interaction in the ocean. What do you think waves do? I would only assume that there is a lot of gas exchange there. Maybe that is another reason why there is so much more life flourishing near reefs is because there is a lot of gas exchange. Who knows?...
Mark, where can I get one of those breathers that the Jedi's have? Of all the people in the world, I'm sure that you know where or have some plan on how to build it. It sure would be nice not to have to lug a b.c. and regs everywhere.
