I am new to the hobby and just wanted to say, I have fragged my silver tip Xenia and the frags I made (from cutting) are doing quite well.  I actually shared one of the with kini.

I have heard stories from friends of mine of Xenia imploding if you don't frag it.  Has anyone else experienced this?

I want my Corals to be as healthy as possible.  I think I might make one or two more small frags.  The rock I am taking the clippings form has 4 nice healthy pieces of Xenia on it.  The Main coral has recovered very well and very fast from the cutting.  I trimmed two separate stocks.  I took a branch off of each of them.

When I first got my xenia I let it grow until there was no room for it to spread without moving downward. It looked like the branches and tips were breaking off and dissolving. I cut off about half of it and through most away. I did frag some of it and all the stuff I kept thrived. A bunch of the heads that came off found their way to other rocks and started growing. I now frag about every 2 to 3 weeks to keep this from happening again.

I'm in the midst of a Xenia crash myself. Not sure what caused it but my whole crop has died off.

I have had my xenia for about a year and a half without propogating and they thrive. How long have you had yours Mike? I have heard that this happens and I am hoping to change this phenomenon

I had a slight crash just before the last reef tour.  My back glass was almost completely covered with xenia (looked very good, imo).  I came home one day to that unmistakeable smell of xenia and found the xenia stalks at the top near the water line were rotting.  I removed the offenders (and later removed all the xenia from the back glass).  It's interesting that Kevin's had a similar problem (no room to grow upwards).  My neighbor's never experienced this with his xenia and his tank is very heavily stalked with xenia.  The xenia in my tank on the rocks has never done anything but grow out of control...

See the June 2000 issue of the Sea Star Online. The article specifically addresses Xenia crashes.

Any organism, plant or animal, in abundance will cause problems at some point. You can quote me on this! I've seen it way to many times.

My opinion is that the safest way is not to let anything grow to more than 5-10% of total tank organism biomass.

I've had mine just a bit less than a year Carl. It was growing like a weed then it just crashed. There are a few ideas I've been kicking around as to the cause but I'm to new to be sure. 1) new lighting system. I upgraded from 250watts of PC's to 300watts of MH's. 2) no skimmer and less than optimal water changes. 3) Old MH bulbs. Like I said though I'm to new to the hobby to now for sure. My water tests good although I have noticed my whole tank slowing down as far as growth. Coralline algae has slowed down a great deal also. I'm working at trying to get a skimmer now to see what that will do.
