I just wanted to do a poll of what parameters people were runnning just to collect data about peoples tank.  Be careful though, I have a deep six hydrometer and its was WAY off.  Flaz brought over his refractometer yesterday, and I am ordering one today.  I cant believe how far off that thing is.  Anyway here are my perameters and setup.

1 x 250 watt metal halide (6500K),

1 x 250 watt metal halide (10,000K)

1 x 175 watt metal halide (12,000K)

2 x 160 watt 6 foot VHO actinics 03

Salinity - 1.024

Temperature - 77-81 during the course of the day.  With 1000 watts, temperature fluctuates alot.  I had my fans pulling air out of the tank, and last night, I flipped them around to push in the tank to see if that lowered the temp.  One of the fans went out yesterday, and the temp actually got up to 83!  I am sure the reefs of the world flucutate temperatue also at night.  I use to have the data somewhere, but I can't find it now.  Does anyone have this data available?  My ideal temperature would be 78 degrees.

I'm running 2 -250 MH Bulbs, 2-160 6' Actinics - Temperature stays between 78-80.  I also just bought a refractometer - Two different hydrometers I had gave me reading of 1.023.  With the refractometr right off I was at 1.027 -
Got it back down to 1.025 now.

125 Gallon x-high (1.5X2X5)

2 X 175 W Metal halide (10,000K)

2 X 140 W VHO (Actinic 03)

Salinity = 1.022 (according to my 6 year old Deep Six Hydrometer)

Temp = 77-79

Need to get Flaz or Rfoote to drive North with their refractometers. Might be interesting to see how far off my Deep Six is. Might have to (pun fully intended) deep six it.

What's a "refractometer"? Is it maore accurate than a floating hydrometer?

Shane I live up north in Syracuse.  Where are you at?  Suzy - a refractometer is for testing salinity.  According to everything I've ever read you can't really trust a hydrometer.  You can pick up a decent refractometer for anywhere between $50 - $100.  I actually for kicks borrowed 7 different hydrometers and tested each one several times.  I got different readings in one day with the same water from 1.017 to 1.023.  I bought a refractometer and borrowed two others to test it.  Every single time I tested with all three I was around 1.026 - 1.027.  A little higher than I knew and wanted it to be.

20 gallon w/sump, skimmer

1 X 250 watt MH (12,000 K...10,000K next time)

36 watts PC (crappy blue light...never again)

1.024 - 1.026 using a floating hydrometer.  I would be interested in checking this against a refractometer.

75 Gallon.

2 x 250 watt MH (10k)

2 x 110 VHO Actintic

1.024 - 1.025 with the Refractometer (I love mine, well worth the $65.00!)

Shane- I'll come visit you soon and bring the refractometer.  I think it would be a great idea if all the members brought a sample of their water to the next meeting and those of us with refractometers could give them an accurate measurement.

80 Gallon Oceanic

2 X 250 Watt MH (10K)

1 X 110 VHO Super Actinic

Hey rfoote, I live in Layton, and flaz is in Clinton, and Shane is in Brigham.  You have any SPS's you want to trade?  I have a few.  Give me a buzz, and we can talk about some trades.  390-0450.

Jeff - I've just had my tank up for a year now and have been leery of adding any sps yet.  Added my first one this past week.

75 Gallon 18x48x24

4 x 95 watt VHO (2 50/50 and 2 super actinic)

1.023-1.024 (measured with a hydrometer).  I really wish I had access to a refractometer to measure the accuracy of my hydrometer.  This might be great for when I finally get off of my butt and go to the meetings.

Temp 78-81

work: 7 gallon mini-bow 32 watt 50/50 pc, 1.023 with refractometer and 80 degrees +/- 1

home: 18 gallon cube 2 x 32 actinic/10K, 1.023 and 80 degrees +/- 1

Refractometers rule!  Best $60 I have spent so far on equipment.  My hydrometer was off by .02.

Was anyone planning on bringing thier refractometer to this Thursdays meeting?  If so I am sure a few of us would love to check the accuracy of our hydrometers.  Myself included.
