Topic: Freshwater Guppies Posted: January 02 2005 at 9:55am |

I know not saltwater, but thought this was fairly strange. I've had a small eclipse tank for about 18 months with neon tetras and 1 female guppy. About 2 weeks ago I had little baby fish everywhere. I just figured they were neons being I only had 1 guppy. There all guppies. Go figure?

Guppies can store reproductive fluids and have several batches of babies after only 1 visit to a tank with a male. I must say that 18 months seems like a long time to store those fluids though.
If some of them grow up and have some decent coloring on them I'm looking for a new strain to put in my tanks. I have several generations of guppies now, but you are only supposed to let them interbreed with each other a maximum of 3 generations. Maybe we could work a trade.

Wouldn't it be cool, if it were possible, to be the one to develop the new "neoppy" or would it be called a "guppeon."

I vote for "Guppeon". However, since they breed so differently I'd have to wonder what kind of genetic laboratory you have to make it happen.

Will - Let me see how many of em' live and I'd like to do a trade. I can tell a couple of them are males and not sure about the rest yet. I'm trying to think how long I've had the female, it had to at least be about this time last year.

I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.

Wow! Lots of people to trade Guppies with. I have a large batch growing up right now myself. When they are a little larger well all have to get together for a swap.
