Why is it that everyone uses acrylic instead of plexiglass for creating dividers in the sump/refugium?

I use the needlepoint mesh from the craft store.I want the water to flow
through it.

If you didnt know... Lowes will cut plexiglass to size for you... im going to get some today pending on the idea im going to use..
