Topic: Acrapora and VHO? Posted: August 31 2003 at 10:58pm |
Is there anyone successfully keeping acrapora corals under VHO lights? I purchased a frag and I am seeing some tissue recession, and wanted to know if this is due to the lighting or just something else in the tank.

How much wattage in vho do you have and how far below it did you place the frags? I have some acropora, pavona birds nest and montipora frags that are all doing well under vho.

4 inches below the surface with about 380 watts with the bulbs about 3 inches above the water. I have a few different montiporas and they are doing well along with a merulina, so ... The tissue is recessing in one patch on the side and a stripe up one of the two main branches. So I don't know what would be causing this.

Richard,
If the necrosis gets any worse, frags off what you can salvage before you lose the whole coral. I'm not sure what would be causing it, just save what you can.

Isn't your tank a 125? You need more light IMO.

Yes Acrapora may live under VHO but it`s not going to flourish like it would under correct lighting!!!

Yes it is possible but unless the tank is shallow or you have your corals placed high in the tank you will do more "maintaining" than "growing".
I have a 55 (48x20x13) with several acros (frags) of various types and they are indeed growing but slowly with 2 x 110 VHO and 2 x 40 blue moons. In my 125 which has (a retina frying) 1150 watts of metal halide/VHO/NO growth is roughly double. Just my observation in my tanks. I resisted the Halide thing for a while but finally broke down with the 125 and I am glad I did despite the heat and drain on electricity which is a down side to them.
IMHO, for a 75 you would need 4 x 110 VHO minimum although I guess you could get by with a little less. 2 x 110 VHO with twin 175 watt Halides would be much better.

It is my understanding that our famous friends in Boise, www.garf.org one of the first to develop coral propagation, still use only VHO (see images in the other lighting topic currently running). They keep them close to the lights though. Of course that's where acro grow in the wild (just below the water's surface) so it makes sense and looks a bit like an actual reef!
IMO VHO creates the brightest and most colorful SPS.
