Hey there... SO i have noticed the past few months that I am getting a collection of empty Hermit Shells, maybe snail shells too, in the corner of my tank on each side. I have replaced hermits recently and again have noticed that more shells keep piling up...

In reading a post about an awesome chalice I see that wrasses eat inverts... I thought I had reef safe wrasses but it appears not... Does anyone know of a list of wrasses that are known to eat inverts?

I currently have 4 wrasses in my tank :
1 Solorensis
1 African Exquisite
1 Six Line ( started small and is getting a lot bigger.... He is my suspect)
1 Common Blue Cleaner Wrasse

Thoughts as we are wanting to put in 10 Halloween Hermits and if there going to get eaten thats an expensive lunch!!!!

Any Wrasse can get a taste for hermits.

Are you sure you don't have a Mantis Shrimp living in a rock. Its home will be in/under the rock nearest the pile of shells. Do you hear loud clicking at night? It can sound so loud you think the glass will break. Let us know. There are several options for removing/killing it.

If it is a Wrasse, it's not that hard to catch it in the act, just watch carefully after adding new Hermits.
Catching and removing fish can be pretty easy. http://utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=29554 There is also the pop bottle trap and I am the keeper of the two WMAS loaner fish traps.

Great thoughts, I do not have a mantis shrimp although we used to have a Tiger Pistol Shrimp that disapeared after out tank upgrade... think I lost him in the move because we no longer hear him "click". We also lost a tiger Prawn that just disappeared as well. No Flower Anemone in this tank. As far as watching the wrasses when new inverts are placed in the tank.... I have not seen any weird behavior or pecking as I do when I put new Hermits in my 36 with our Valintini Puffer... He pecks them immediately! Continuing my research...

Rusty said it may just be the cycle of life since its been almost 6 months since we stocked the first round....

That's it. Rusty caught it. I replenish Snails and Hermits every 3-6 months, to keep the population up so I don't have any surprise algae blooms.
