Topic: 90 Gallon Mixed Reef Build Posted: June 12 2014 at 7:03pm |
Time has come to start a big tank! what better than a nice 90 gallon setup to start with. I got the tank from someone here on the forum local and transported it back home to california. Oh and on the topic, good news! The photon clownfish pair i won at fragstock made it to california and are doing well! thanks to who donated those, they are fabulous!!! I have been working hard lately cleaning and polishing out the acrylic tank and am currently waiting on weldon 4 to seal a small crack on the top. We have chosen a nice wood stand for the tank (if i had more time i could have made an absolutely beautiful stand) but i will still make a hood to go with it. we are currently modifying and strengthining the stand for the tank to fit the overflow and install a solid bottom for the acrylic. Pictures to come soon! any questions or comments are welcome! list of equipment and details on setup will come with pictures along with when i figure pit what will be used.

Time for pictures!! Starting with current livestock that will temporarily fill the tank once it is set up. 3 yellow tail damsels, 2 photon clownfish, algae blenny, 2 anemones, and possibly 2 clarkiis. + many crabs and snails. I have a rock full of green palys and some other green birds nest frags and digi frags that will go in. Nice feather duster and the pretty button polyps I won at Fragstock. I also have 5 frags of xenia that I plan on having cover the entire back wall along with some frags of GSP that I will purchase. Hopefully after a year or so they will grow to cover the back wall of the tank to provide a pretty flowing background. Starting with the stand, it is a nice oak stand we bought here in California and modified to fit a center overflow and support it more to ensure a nice long life out of it. Also we had to create a solid bottom for the acrylic so why not go the extra mile to ensure that it will last for many years to come! We added 6 vertical 2x4 beams for corner structural support, one on each corner and two on the ends of the cutout for the overflow seen below. a smaller beam runs the length of the front for support and two braces will run front to back dividing the top into thirds as we had to remove the center brace pre installed for the overflow. The sump will be 2 ten gallons with 2 2in siphon pvc tubes connecting the two for overflow purposes and to be able to fit them into the tank. The first 10 gallon will have a filter sock with the skimmer in the same chamber area with the water level around 9 in. then it will flow into an area where the heater and some rubble rock will be and the water level will be around half the tan height, then the second 10 gallon tank will contain a layer of rubble rock on bottom with tons of macroalgae, chaeto and such in half the tank with a home depot light above it and will be divided with eggcrate for the return pumps. Currently I have 2 225 gph petco powerheads that will feed the return through a antibackflow valve to the tank. It wont be much, but it is all we have until we save up for a better return pump. For now the overflow is just a 1in pvc pipe with 3/4 inch tubing that will run to the sump. that should be able to hold the amount of water flow for now. I currently don't have any silencing systems for it. What would be the best way to silence this overflow with the space provided and only one drain hole? If I could use both holes I would simply use a gate valve to match the exact flow and leave the other as an emergency pipe and have the return run up and over the back into the overflow but im being told I cant do that right now. We will see if I am right and end up having to do this after all As for the hood, I am currently about half way done making the hood for the tank, I have no appreciable pictures right now but will post when it is done. I will be using an aquamaxx 200asm skimmer for this tank that I acquired locally in Utah from another fellow reefer. Thanks a bunch for that. I will also be using a 300 watt heater of a brand I don't know right now. Lighting is unknown right now but I do have a 250w MH 14k lamp hanging around that will unfortunately "heat up the room too much" so that's out of the picture until winter hits. I have a few powerheads to circulate the water but not much right now. Only a 450gph tunze and 250gph head. So far that's all I can think of, will post with more soon. Enjoy the rest of the pictures. again, thanks to who donated the Photon clown pair!!! They will be the Main feature of the tank. Beautiful coral I won and that would be all for now! questions, comments, and ideas are all welcome and very appreciated at this point!!! Oh and I go to college in Utah so im there 9 months out of the year so that's why this build is in California. Hopefully when I leave and come back the coral growth will be amazing!!! -Andrew

Before you fill it with water there are some things that ought to be done. Would you like to know what I see? Aloha

Quarantine tank is also set up and running. Added a float valve to the sump and will be looking to add some dosing pump system because I am finding myself dosing calcium quite a bit. I will also be replacing the single 250w metal halide lamp with 2 120w led systems. Soon I will be looking into getting the system a little more automated for as little cost as possible. May grab an rodi unit and run it through the attic to the tank, should be easy. Im also looking into apex and control systems but for now they are too pricey. Along with dosing pumps to keep the tank low maintenance.
