    Posted: January 27 2014 at 5:06pm
All,

If there's interest, I'm willing to host a workshop at my home this summer on how to recharge deionizing resin. I'm posting this now so anyone interested can start saving their resin up.

If you're interested, please let me know. I'm located near Hill AFB (South Ogden/Layton area). Maybe some of the southern-most folks could send one person up with all of theirs. The cost per pound of DI resin recharged would be around $1-$2 (compared to about $10+ if purchased new).

DI resin can be recharged nearly indefinitely, but it lasts about a month less than new resin.

Here's my writeup on how to do it:
http://www.reefdup.com/2012/09/12/how-to-recharge-di-resin/

Anyway...just thought I'd offer since I'll need to recharge mine.

I'd be interested. Mine will need recharging in a few months time.

Yes - I've recharged the color-changing resin twice now, and it still changes color. Over time it will lose its color changing ability, but by then, recharging should've saved you enough money to purchase a TDS meter, which is a much better judge of when to change out the resin.

Also...if any of you aren't interested in recharging your DI resin but would like to recycle it, please let me know. There's no point in this stuff going to the landfill.

I have no idea how many times the color-changing stuff can be recharged before it no longer changes color, but it's over two times at least. The color change definitely degrades each time, but it's not complete. The recharging process changes the resin back to its original color as well. (Maybe a chemist like bmac could chime in here.......)

I've used it two years after recharging with no problems...so at least that long. I vacuum seal it and store it in the dark. I've read that vacuum sealing it in Mylar is even better than the plastic I use, but I've never bothered with it. If people are interested, we could go with the Mylar, but it'd cost everyone a little extra.

Can I walk over and do mine? That resin (recharged) that you gave me tonight saved me. I had 18 coming out of the RO side and 22 out of the DI side, now I have 0 out the DI side. And I was OUT of water too.

Thanks! and count me in for the session.

Ok, so I have the below people interested. If you can, please estimate how many pounds/cartridges you think you'll bring (so I can have enough supplies on hand).

I'm in although I don't go through much resin. I'm still running the batch I put in 14 months ago and my TDS after the resin just changed from 0 to 1 last week. I am using more water now with the new tanks setup so maybe I'll have more before you do the workshop. Either way I'm in.

How do you recommend we store the resin in the mean time?

I probably wouldn't drive all the way north since I have a new package of resin waiting downstairs, but I will save the old stuff and send it your way.

As long as the resin is contained, it is fine. I use ziploc bags or tupperware containers.
