It's been a long time since I was on this forum. Years I think. I took a long break from reefkeeping and only have a 28g JBJ Nano Metal Halide tank now. It's been pretty much on autopilot for a few years and surprisingly, I haven't lost too much.

Just the other day though, my ballast starting shutting off and then after a few minutes, it would come back on. Then it would shut off again after 20 or 30 minutes. It doesn't this non-stop. I'm guessing the ballast is on its way out. I've scoured the web looking for a replacement ballast to what I have now (which is exactly like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/JBJ-NanoCube-HQI-Gear-Box-W-EndCaps-Wires-Bulb-ballast-driver-/281072141263?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D6317936159196311221%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D281072141263%26

I'm a bit wary though of ordering something used. Especially at that price. Any suggestions? I don't know much about wiring. Should any ballast replacement do and I just have to rewire the connectors?

Well welcome back to the site and hobby!

I've had good luck over the years with ebay but others haven't. You can always ask the seller for a reason why they are selling it. Maybe they just did an LED upgrade and the thing is all but new. Then again, maybe it does the same thing yours does.

If you aren't comfortable with it you could check out Mediabaskets.com They have replacement part for $109 new. (I think it's the right part but better double check)

Thanks. That's exactly what I needed. I searched forever for that. Hopefully they still have it in stock. Honestly, if I had the time, I would probably buy an LED kit and do something more modern but I'm stuck between just selling the whole thing ASAP with a broken ballast which no one would want or investing more money on old technology because I dont have the experience or time to do the LED kit.
