    Posted: July 05 2012 at 1:00pm

I am going to be setting up a 220 tank.  I will be putting LED's on the tank.  I am hung up on 2 companies right now.

1st choice
with the 50% more led for a total of 126 3W Leds.

2ND choice
I would be doing 4 of there 36 led kits with an 18" heatsink.  This will have a total of 144 3W leds

The first choice is much less but I have not been able to find out much about the company and how there people like there lights.

I would love any advice you could offer

Thanks for your help

Yes sir I sure do.  Big smile  Just that the others are $600 less.  But if they suck I guess that is alot of $$$$ to cry about.

My Cree's grow coral like weeds...

I would build mine almost identically today, and I would buy Cree again.  Not sure what that means but its true.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler -A.E.

So last question on lighting I think.  Should I use 3-4 AI units on a 220 tank?

Length? Almost certainly 4 I would think. Also, dimming will enable you to deal with "too much light". But I doubt 4 is even close to overkill on what must be a 6 ft tank.

I got the controler with it.  I was also told that I could trade out for the controler that will work with the apex.  I have been told that the AI controler is pertty cool.

They will be over a 220 (72x24x30).  I have seen som people putting 5 units over a 90 tall tank.  So I was like maybe I need to add more like.  Then again they also had them at close to 100%.  So I am sure that in a few week they posted a vid on how they bleached out there corals and the lights are just junk.

I believe the spread on each fixture is 24in max on the AI sol.  I could be wrong, but think that is what I was reading.

So it sounds like it should work out for you.

You can do three and get away with it but four might be better for optimal lighting.

5 over a 90? Now that's just crazy talk! WAY overkill.

None at the moment

You'll need the VDM module to run the AI's with your apex.  I run two units on my 4" 75 gal.  I would bet that 4 would be enough for a 220gal tank.

Thanks for all of the input.  I have purchased 3 units so far.  I am planning on getting a 4th but I am going to wait until Aug to see how there new one looks.
