Topic: 72 bowfront update Posted: March 16 2012 at 12:16am |
This is my very first tank ever. It is a 20 gal with 30watt leds, 2 10w 10,000k leds and 1 10w super actinic blue hybrid led which is 3 chips 20000K + 6 chips 455nm Royal blues. The white kind of wash out the blue because they are so powerful, so I will be getting another blue led to balance it out. Here are some pictures of my tank.
*update* I rearranged the rock in the tank which has made everything much happier, my wrasse comes out a lot more now that he has a million paths to swim, as well as there are two large caves under the rocks which the serpent and the fire fish love. As you can see I got my Mochas a RBTA and a GBTA they were hosting it them with in the first 36 hours of putting them into the tank, they host in both. Everything is growing and thriving including my daisy's which weren't doing to well after i got them but are recovering very well and are at about 75% of the colony is back and I and now just waiting for the toadstool I got, along with the BTA, from Pam to not be so angry. Enjoy the Pictures!
New rockscaping
Scarlet Crab having a staring contest with my phone.
Walter and lily in there new home. RBTA being angry under blues- the picture doesn't to it justice.

Congrats... Welcome to the addiction...
Your sand looks very white even down towards the bottom. How long have you had it up and running?

I have flying monkeys and I'm not afraid to use them.

Thanks for so many pics. They give us a good picture of the state of affairs and what to advise you to watch out for. I agree with Connie. The tank is so clean and white. Though it looks cool now, that's not exactly the best way to keep a healthy reef. Until a lot more life (soft surface algae, coralline algae, bugs and worms) grows on the rock and in the sand, it could very easily get overloaded and suddenly there would be fish and coral death and/or a bloom of unwanted algae. I'd recommend slowing down and enjoying watching things grow. I would not add any more fish and only add a few soft coral over the next two months. Shells are visible on the sand. Were these live snails? How many snails are alive in the tank? Ideally, a reef tank should always have about one herbivorous snail (Astrea, Cerith, Margarita, Nerite) per gallon, but in the first 3-6 weeks that is usually too many because there is not enough algae for them to eat. When snails die they unfortunately add a lot of pollution which risks a bloom of problem algae. Add more snails as the algae grows more visible. ASAP I'd add some macroalgae; Caulerpa and/or Cheatomorpha algae. In the first 3-6 months of a tanks life it goes through some major changes; changes that could be disaterous without some macroalgae to provide immediate water purification and a kind of living balance to the newly emerging life of the tank. It's looking good. Have fun.

The tank has been up for a total of 2 weeks It cycled for a week with Nature's Ocean Bio-Active Live Aragonite sand. I received the rock in my tank and a large part of my sand (10lbs) from Arthur, Which is mostly why everything is so clean and white. I do not plan on getting anymore fish for the tank for quite some time and a few corals from coral stock, Maybe.
I only have a total of 4 snails - Nerites, and 3 crabs in the tank. The shells on the bottom of the tank are not from live snails I got them when I bought the tank I put them in there for the crabs to have shells to trade in and out of, Which they have been doing.
There Is actually quite a bit of surface algae in the tank the large coral skeleton it pretty covered in it and the snails to crazy. But the lights are too power full and wash out a lot of the color (I am planning on either switching out or adding another blue light for one of the lights)
I also do have some macro algae that is in a little refugium on the back of the tank made out of a filter, which is not shown in the pictures.
I also have help from AquaBlue (Bryce)
Thanks for looking and for the advice.

Very nice tank! I'm glad to see that the corals are doing well. Are the daisies doing any better? Good luck and have fun!

They are trying to recover, they are still in the holding tank, I don't want to move them back in to this one until they get better and are stable enough to handle the move. I lost about 3/4 of the little colony though, which I really sad but I am going to wait to see how they recover.

My tank has gone through a lot of changes since I first started reefing. I Currently have a 46 Bowfront and will be going to a 72 bowfront tonight. Mean while here's some pictures of the tanks changes.

I'm in the process of building my stand for my 72 gallon. I have gotten the tank ready to switch over.
I made a trip to homedepot for some 2x4's and 2x6's. I got 1 2x6x12 and 3 2x4x12
Then I had them cut to the length I needed so I didn't have to do it.
and threw them into a shopping cart.
Took them home and made Bryce (Aquablue) put it together.

The stand is down stairs and the top is nailed on and cut for the overflow.
I'm going to have to wait to move the tank over until Sunday because my stupid drill battery died so I can't put the screws into the stand. But I have cleaned the front and sides of the 72 as well as spray painted the back black. I also have all of the fittings and plumbing ready to be put into the tank. As for about a week or so the stand won't have any wrapping because I haven't figured out what I want to do with that part yet.
This was the tank when we picked it up.
I cleaned up the sides and the front but left the coraline on the back of the tank for two reasons, One my urchins can eat it and two new coraline will grow over it faster.
I didn't realize how exhausting this could be but in the end it will be worth it. So until I can move everything I will just admire my 46 while it's still up...

My 72 is up finally it only took 8 too many hours and I have absolutely no idea what the rock work looks like or if I smashed any coral since I had to put all my rock back into the tank blind since the water wasn't exactly clear at all. So, I will see when I wake up what I did. There was only one Casualty in the 8 hours and it was the side of me toe getting smashed by the stand. None the less here are a few pictures of the process.
After putting the tank where the old 46 was and deciding it was to big and crowded the space it was moved out an to the other room.
While doing so, the stand decide to shove a chunk of wood into my toe.

Tank looks Great =)
Although to me it looks like there might be flukes/trematodes whatever you want to call it or two on that blue eyed khole tang and possibly on that lieutenant tangs fins.... they are little transparent parasites if you watch them long enough they will crawl around on your fish
If they aren't flukes I'm sorry to have brought it up... but if they are your fish will thank me...
a cleaner wrasse usually does the trick to clear them up if it is what it looks like (even tho you have a cleaner shrimp Id still get the wrasse)
