Do you guys recommend using a Sulfur Reactor?
I bought my tank used and it had one on it when I bought it.
I had AD move it (the tank) and they recommended me removing it.
I was curious as to everyone thoughts on these.
Its been running for about a year now with out it and my nitrates just keep on creeping up.

I know my nitrates have been staying the 30s the last few weeks despite of me running my lights more and my sump light running 24/7 plus pulling out tons of algae from the sump. I am dosing Mag to increase the algae growth. (plus a major water change 2 weeks ago)

So I am basically debating on starting this reactor back up again.

Thoughts?

Nitrates at 30 ppm isn't bad, certainly not enough to go to the trouble of a Sulfur De-Nitrator.
What's more important to consider is how are the coral and everything doing?
Also, what are the other parameters, especially the more important parameters of Alkalinity and Calcium?
Are you trying to improve the tank's general health?
If so, please post a pic so we can see what you are working with.
There are so many ways to improve aquarium health Smile which have a side effect of reducing Nitrogen pollution.

Ok here are my most resent tests results, I had aquirum masters in ogden test for me.

Nitrate 60  (after the water change 2 weeks ago it was at 30 so its climbing back up)
Nitrite 0
PH 8.0
KH 10
Cal 500

I will take some pictures tonight of my setup and upload them.

Thanks

Ok I am going to put a pic of the equipment I am currently using,

My main pump on the closed loop system

My sump/refuge with algae growing in the middle with a grow light above it. Also have an all plastic top off that is tied into my ro/di filter to replace fresh water thats lost to evap.. Before I put this on I was adding about 3 gal a day manually..

My RO/Di filter 50 g a day (its downstairs in my basement and I have a line running to my upstairs into the tank)

My All Seas Marine ASM Protein Skimmer I think its a G2

My Red Sea Aquazone Plus 100 Ozone which is ported into my skimmer

The view looking directly above (down) my fuge

The Sulfur Reactor sitting in my garage (ran it for the first 4 months I had the tank but when I moved it to my home from my business that's when aquatic dreams suggested I remove it)

Some pics of rocks

I think its called a Toadstool Leather?

A yellow sponge and tons of majano anemones (you will see more on other rock)

This red/brown stuff started growing after I did my big water change 2 weeks ago

Some zoos that have started turning back to green from a very pale white

If you look close you can see a file fish he is a new addition as of this afternoon (hoping he will eat some of the majano

Well I hope I didnt over do it on the pictures.. but if you want any shots of anything else let me know. I took them with my cell phone so I know there not the best..
Thanks for the advice..
I just wanna have a good (healthy) home for these awesome fish n corals!

Thanks for the pics. They are great and help a lot.

The problems I see are caused by too much pollution and not enough biofiltration. This can be remedied without adding the de-nitrator. A few more questions before making suggestions

What is the usual water change amount and frequency?
FYI, that maroon colored algae is Cyanobacteria and water changes add nutrients which grow algae.
What is the TDS of the purified water going into the tank as top-off and water changes?
How old is the RO Membrane?
When was the last time the DI Resin was changed?
How about tank feeding, like how much and how often of what foods?
Has the Copperband Butterflyfish eaten any of the Majano?
What is it eating?

What is the usual water change amount and frequency?
The tank was moved to its current location, (with 90% new water) my house in april, during that time I have only done 2 water changes, one that was 15 gallons in aug and then I did a 50 gallon two weeks ago.

FYI, that maroon colored algae is Cyanobacteria and water changes add nutrients which grow algae.

Thoughts to speed its (cyano) death?

What is the TDS of the purified water going into the tank as top-off and water changes?
I dont have a way to test this, is there a kit or product you recommend? I am guessing I could take some down to one of the LFS and have them test it.

How old is the RO Membrane?

I bought the RO unit (new from AD in clearfield) about a year ago.. But I only used it about 1 month before I moved my tank and then I just got the line ran and setup in november.. So I would say it has 4-5 months use on it (So I was using tap water for a good 7 months)

When was the last time the DI Resin was changed?

See above... (never) But just so I know is the a scheduled amount of time when I should change them? or is it more based on my TDS readings?

How about tank feeding, like how much and how often of what foods?

Ok feeding is pretty simple, I feed frozen mysis I use 1 cube daily, also every other day I put a strip of seaweed probably 1 inch by 5 inch in. My fish eat this all up very quickly..
I also have some flake food that I will put a pinch in here and there. but not daily.

If I have a large group of people at my house sometimes I will feed a extra cube of mysis just to show the tank eating..

Oh, I also feed my carpet anemone a frozen uncooked shrimp once a week.

Also while I feed I shut off the sump but leave my closed loop system running. After about 12 mins I kick the sump back on.

Has the Copperband Butterflyfish eaten any of the Majano?
He has only been in the tank about a week, I purchased him for the majano on the advice from Mike at AM. in Ogden. So far I am not sure if he is eating at it.. I have seen him picking on the undersides of the rocks. I have seen him eat a few small mysis shrimp.. but really he hasnt shown much intrest in the food I have giving him. I have some garlic on the way hoping that will get him to start eating more. He doesnt look like he has lost any weight but its only been 7 days. The first few days the yellow tang was giving him a hardtime but seems to have accepted him being in the tank now.

Water changes feed algae.

"...dosing Mg to increase algae growth" is not a practice I would suggest. What kind of Mg product and what is the Mg level currently? 1200-1400ppm is an acceptable range.

Water changes of 10% monthly are much better for the health of the tank than the occasional large water change

I would definitely take the RO/DI water to a hobbyist or LFS for checking. It should be less than 5ppm TDS.

I would also stop feeding for a few days and then feed only half as much from then on. The Carpet Anemone does not need to be fed for a long time, which will significantly reduce the food input into the system. This food portioning will do two things. It will hopefully starve the Cyanobacteria and it will hopefully make the Copperband hungry enough to eat Majano.

I would also use the techniques discussed often here for killing Majano. Squirt them with lemon juice, vinegar, Joes Juice, Aiptasia X and more. Each tank is different so find the substance that works best in your tank.

The Scooter Blenny is eating the bugs which would eat the algae. I see a tank that may be starting to grow Hair Algae. Are there any spots of it showing up?

The sand bed seems to be pushed around. Why is that? If it is a sand throwing blenny or jawfish, there is another big reason for higher than expected N levels.
