I've seen now in the random stores I've surfed online that there are aquarium controllers - I'm assuming these control everything from the powerheads to create waves to the lights... I'm interested in this because I would like to be able to turn the powerheads off while feeding without having to unplug / plug them.

Suggestions?  Ideas? Recommendations?

Why?
Are you afraid the animals will not be able to find or catch the food as it moves in the current?

In my feeding, I add foods in small amounts 10-30 seconds apart and watch the fish go crazy as they swim quickly all over to catch the food. This is how it is in the wild. Coral also catch food on the run.

Hope this information helps add to your understanding. Smile

Intially your post caught my attention because I wondered if, in your self contained tanks, you might be interested in the "Poorman's Wavemaker". Check it out in the Reefkeeping Tips link below.

Mark -
I just know it sometimes makes it easier for me to turn off the powerheads for a few seconds while spot feeding - but you're right I suppose it does make it more like they would be in the wild.  I would be interested in the poor man's wavemaker and will actually go over and read up on it. :)

I have an Apex controller and really appreciate what it does.  Aside from managing the lights, heaters, ATO, and pumps it also allows me to remotely check in on the tank.

I have a couple feed modes programmed.  The first is my basic daily feed.  It shuts off the return pump (and skimmer) for about 10 minutes and my two power heads for about 2 minutes.  This gives me time to drop some food on the coral and allow for some food to reach the sandbed so my gobies can get some mysis.  After 2 minutes, the powerheads kick back on and stirs the food around the tank.  By the time my return pump kicks back on the food has been eaten.  I feel this prevents uneaten food from making it to my filter bag and decomposing there.

My other feed mode is for phyto or oyster feast.  In this mode, I turn off the return pump for about 30-40 minutes and the skimmer for about 60 minutes.  I feel this allows the food to circulate longer in the display allowing for better opportunity for the coral to eat.

Thanks for the input guys!  I have been looking into these and they are pretty expensive - not really in my budget as of yet... but will keep an eye out once I'm ready for it. :)

Mandy it was nice meeting you guys the other day - hope the 'nem is doing well in your tank. Small world - can't believe you know my Grandma!

When you are ready, I'll be selling my Wavemaster Pro. It's the one I showed you when you were at my house. Here's a DFS link.

It works really well, controlling up to 4 pumps or powerheads, including the main pump. It runs several modes, but I prefer the random reef mode. It also automatically switches to a calmer mode at night and is perfect for feeding - just press a button, and all but one powerhead shuts off. I have 2 on the back bottom sides facing forward and up, one in the top center facing forward and my main pump all connected. All but the center one switches off when I press the feed button. I squirt my food in the front center and the powerhead pushes it out to both sides and down to my bottom feeders perfectly every time.

New they are $150, I'd sell mine for $85. My controller would do almost the same thing (with some careful programming ) if I bought another power module. They cost $85 so it'd be perfect, if and when you are ready, just let me know.

Mike - it was great meeting you too.  Yeah - your grandma is pretty cool. :)  I would be interested... might be about a month before we could get the funds for the purchase, but I will keep in touch with you and may even shoot you a few pics of the tank we are thinking of using it on and get suggestions of powerhead placement from ya with the unit.  I would also be interested in having you walk me through some of the programming - I'm computer literate enough I can figure out a lot of the technical things.. just need a seasoned vet showing me the ropes first. :D

She is a cool old cat for sure! I helped her get her first Mac last year, and she is loving it. No tech support needed there...

I am in no hurry, and will gladly show you all about it when and if you decide you want it. I won't list it in the meantime, and funds are always tight with me, so I wouldn't even be buying another module for my controller to replace this until I sell it, so it'd be an nice even trade if it ends up working out for you.

Yeah post up (or text) some pics and I'll give you my $0.02 on placement - I think its critical to have an uneven, broken water surface - after all the gas exchange takes place up there and it makes for a nice shimmer effect as well. If you think about it, the ocean is never a glass-like surface like a lake is - even in it's calmest state. I point my powerheads up from the bottom to increase circulation, help with dead spots and exchange oxygen.

Having the powerheads alternate also helps and seems to better distribute food for corals and fish.
