I have the option to pick up a R/O unit for a reasonable price. The only problem is that I don't like the actual R/O membrane in this unit. It will need to be replaced in a few months so I can then get the membrane that I would prefer (Dow filmtec). That is if the membrane fittings are universal fittings. So - my question is - are the fittings standardized among the various R/O suppliers? Or is this another one of the areas where everybody uses a proprietary fitting so that you have to buy their replacement filters etc??

Yeah - I probably already know the answer to my own question. Any input on R/O units in general also appreciated.

There is a standard, but there are also some that are not standard.  So you will need to make sure it is a standard RO unit.

Edit:  is it a unit with the pre-filters, then the membrane mounted on top.  Something like this

I believe all 4 units, including the membrane,  are below. Not sure what is under the top cover.

I wouldn't count on a filmtec fitting.  You will have to ask whoever is selling it if it will fit, because it does not seem standard.
