Topic: aquatraders lights Posted: November 10 2010 at 10:28pm |
Ok I know what I am going to hear but I was a little desperate and short on cash after having some problems with my tank crashing. I really wanted to upgrade to metal halide lights and found a fixture on aquatraders website. It is a 48" dual halide 250w with 4 t5 ho actinics. Well after ordering it and waiting almost 2 weeks it arrives and upon opening it I find out that one of the actinics is broken. Well that can happen in shipping I think and so I think I will give them a call about it anyway to see if they will replace it, I go to the website and lo and behold no phone number, you have to email them. I send off an email and get a reply pretty quick, sorry we don't guarantee the bulbs but if you want a replacement send $8.00 and pictures of the broken bulbs. Sure that's fair, I send off a couple of pictures and ask how and where to send the money for the replacement bulbs. In the meantime I go and pick up a replacement bulb and put it in and all is fine, lights look pretty good and I am happy. Well today I get home from work and the back actinics are out, switch is on but no actinics. Also still no reply from aquatraders about the bulbs. I send them off an email again about the bulbs and also the actinics. No word from them yet. So my question is will both bulbs go out if one burns out? They are controlled by the same switch. Hopefully it is just another bulb that got banged around during shipping and just went out. Any advice? I know I shouldn't have gone for the cheap stuff but I just couldn't afford to spend 600-800 bucks on a light system right now and could probably not justify it any time soon to the wife anyway.

If both bulbs aren't working most likely your ballast went out.

Of course just my luck. My son did say he heard a pop just before he noticed that the back lights were out. Is that something I can replace myself if I don't hear back from Aquatraders? Where would you buy a new ballast?

Don, don't panic - these fixtures are fine...
I had 2 of them and had very few problems with either. Broken bulbs upon shipping does happen some time.
Don't worry about "fire", either - the issue was that the capaciitors inside the OLDER VERSION MH ballasts would burn out. A few people came home to smoky ballasts and that got translated ove on RC to "catching fire" and burning people's house down. The ballasts model was replaced a few years back and this is no longer an issue.
These fixtures are not UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed but are CE (China Engineering) listed. Kind of the Chinese UL , since these are made in China.
Alot of electrical stuff that we buy nowadays is (unfortunately) outsourced and not neccesarily UL listed anymore. These Aquatraders fixtures are made in the very same factory as the Coralife fixtures that cost maybe 40% more.
I do agree that the customer service over at Aquatraders is horrible. If you don't get any satisfaction, you might just want to purchase replacement bulbs yourself - or get the 2 ClarkGrizwald has offered you.
To check the T5 ballast in question, just take the 2 good bulbs that are lighting and move them over to the other side and see if they light up.
If yes, then it's just bulbs. If no, then maybe ballast or even a loose / pinched wire or something else.
Pretty easy to fix yourself even if you have to replace the ballast.

The fires associated with Aqua Traders stuff was with the old metal halide ballasts. Sure the fixtures aren't great but I wouldn't worry about fire.
More than likely there is a short somewhere. Pull the fixture apart and check all the wiring.
For a replacement ballast go to Reefgeek.com. Plan on $30-$40 for a good ballast. I would contact CapnMorgan here on the board and see what he can get you.
The biggest issue with Aqua Traders is that everything is cheap. Cheap ballasts, cheap bulbs, cheap fixture and cheap customer service.
I hope they do the right thing and help you out!

Dons, as everyone has said the fixtures themselves are okay. they are just cheap. I've had my 2 250w metal halide and 4 t5's for over a year now and it has been just fine. However the wiring is horribly done. the connections are very poorly done. that is most likely the problem ( at least that's what happened to me and my cousin that got one too.) we had to take it apart and re-solder all the connections. it's pretty easy to actually do as long as you have an iron. I'd check that before going to get a new ballast.

I just bought one of the aquatraders expandable 4 bulb T5 lights and so far I am very happy with it (knock knock lol) I just wanted some supplemtal lighting for a more blue dusk/dawn and some nightlights, and I must say the LEDs are awesome. Perfect amount of light for the night shimmer. Yes the fixture is cheap and cheasy, but heck for $89 delivered to your door, its hard to go wrong.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Looks like I will be tearing them apart tonight when I get home. I am ok with a soldering iron so hopefully that goes ok. I just worry about the pop my son heard and right after the lights don't work.
Chris if you don't mind I would really like to pick up the lights. I don't have anything to trade you for right now because like I said I had a major tank crash and lost most of my corals and only a few fish survived. If we could set something up I work right downtown at the Joseph Smith Building and it looks like you are in North Salt Lake anyway. I will PM you.

Hi Dons, I posted a while back on this thread about my 48" fixture which I had boughter for $320 shipped. Here is my post for ease of reading
"I personally have a fixture that is 2x250MH - 4 T5HO(48inch) - 8moonlight that I got from www.aquatraders.com for $320 shipped. I love the fixture except for the heat the metal halides produce(in the winter its nice and saves me from turning on the heater more often) There will be many people who say Odyssea brand products are cheap crap and they were right at one point in time. I found this website and did my research on the brand. Older posts dating back to 2006 reported fires and melting issues due to the magnetic ballasts instead of electronic which they now use. But now its 2010 and I feel Odyssea has come a long way in lighting. I have had my fixture for about 1.5 yrs now and it is still going strong. I also bought a skimmer and have been pleased with it. Even considered doing a review on the product within the forums for others to see.
In addition to this it cost 1/3 less that comparable products and comes with decent bulbs. I ran my bulbs for over a year and have kept softies, lps, sps, and a clam with no deaths what so ever(120 gal fat). The issues you will hear most is that the ballasts die after a while but the great thing about this is that if they do die there are IceCap ballasts that are a perfect fit and can be swapped with no issues.
From what I have read people will buy this unit, replace the bulbs with higher quality bulbs and replace the ballasts with icecaps and still spend less than other full fixtures. So if you are going to use metal halides I would consider this option.
I don't personally have a bunch of money to spend on lighting and if I did I would have gone with a professionally built LED or MH setup but since that is not the case I went with Odyssea. I think it all comes down to the lighting you prefer first but then the money you are willing to drop."
Im in the same boat and don't have money to blow so keeping my spending to a minimum is a must while in school :(
Also if you want to I have 2 older Odysee Actinic bulbs that are 48" if you want them! They are over a year old but if its just for color then they would work. Let me know. Im in downtown SLC

Not being UL listed does not mean that a fixture will or will not catch on fire. A UL listing means that it has been "certified" by UL. Aquatraders fixtures are not the best made, but they are a good price.
I would not fix the fixture yourself. I am assuming you used a credit card to order the fixture. I would email them an request a replacement fixture and mention that you will dispute the charge with your credit card if they. If they don't replace it or respond quickly then dispute the charge and get your money back.

Email aquatraders and they will take care of you. I have bought a bunch of stuff from them and they have been great to work with.

I have had several emails that have been sent to them. They responded pretty quick with the light bulb issue but since then have not responded at all, not even to let me know how to pay for the new bulb shipping. I sent them and email yesterday morning and have yet to hear back from them. maybe I am just being impatient.

Yeah give them a few days to respond. It's got to be a pita to do customer service over email.
I ordered a couple of cheap Odyssea bulbs from these guys and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised with how the bulbs are performing in my tank.

Agreed! Was going to go with a different brand at first but ended up ordering the Halide bulbs again after seeing how well they performed. And at $15 you can't argue

Just got a call from Chris, ClarkWGrizwald, not only has he offered to give me a couple of the T5 bulbs but has graciously offered to take a look at the lights to make sure everything is connected inside! What a bunch of great people on this board. I really appreciate all the help and offers of help and advice I have found here.
Thanks everyone!

I have run Odyssea lighting for quite some time, the only thing I have changed is icecap ballasts and ushio bulbs still with the stock pc lighting that I haven't changed in YEARS! And for those who are wondering if I saw a difference in the ballasts the awnser is YES much brighter and diffrent color from the aquatraders bulbs.

So just a quick update on the light situation. I switch the lights to see if maybe it was just the lights getting burned out but they still didn't work. I finally was able to contact aquatraders by phone, they only are open at their store in California Friday Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 to 4:30. The girl was very nice but really didn't know too much about the lights, she said that I may have put them in backwards or with the wrong pin first. I looked and looked and couldn't see a pin 1 or a right or wrong way to put them in. She said maybe that was just the old system. I mentioned the ballast and she said that was possible and if I wanted I could either send the fixture back for service or they could send me out a new ballast. I obviously can't be without a light fixture for who knows how long it would take them to fix the lights and get them back to me, I am sure it would be at least 2-3 weeks. In any case she said she would have someone from the tech department call me tomorrow to see what I wanted to do.
In any case they were very friendly. I will probably have them send out a new ballast and hopefully that will work. I looked at all the connections to see if there was something loose as per Chris's advice but I didn't see anything, but that doesn't mean anything.
I got some great advice from Brandon and he showed me his beautiful tank and gave me some inspiration to get mine back up and running.
Thanks again everyone for the advice and hopefully I can get this all worked out.
