I don't think I'm an idiot, but the jury is still out
I bought a Nikon 5700 which is a really nice camera. As close as you can get to an SLR (digital). I have not been able to take one good picture with it. The focus is all off and I really can't figure out how to set it to auto focus. I've seen a bunch of really nice clear detailed pics and alot of close ups that were nothing short of stunning. How the %*ll did you do it?
I'd appreciate some pointers. A lesson? or someone to figure out my camera for me?

Sorry, I didn't include that these were all tank pics. It takes wonderful normal pics but won't focus through all the mediums (glass and then water)

Here's a couple of hints! Remember, I was born blonde, so
don't expect too much!
1: Turn off the flash. It makes it reflect the glass. Youre tank is
well lit enough.
2: Take pics at night with all the room lights off, tv off. These
reflect, too!
3. I take microshots with a little jewelers loop spy glass. It
really works!
4. Play around with the white balance mode. I can't explain it,
but you can get shots of moving fish very crlear. But, I have to
just foo-foo with it to get a good shot.
5. My camera has a macro button. I play with that ,too.
6. Take lots of pics 'till you get one you like. Then, delete the
others!

You might want to include the city where you live. Then someone who knows good stuff might be willing to check it out with you.

camera!

I was playing with my brothers camera yesterday (it wasn't a nikon but this may apply) and I was seeing if it could do macro shots. When I would get real close to an object I noticed that it could no longer auto focus (on the little screen it was all blurry). But then I found if you push the button half way down it forced the camera to try and focus. Doing that I could focus on things that were around 2 inches away. Maybe that would work, maybe not.
Oh, and make sure you don't use any digital zoom. It makes it so you can get really close, but it also makes the quality of the image go WAY down.
