So it's looking like my deployment plans are changing and my wife gave me the green light to start putting my saltwater system together. I buying a used 46 gallon bowfront from the classified section and I thought it would be a good idea to go out to Stansbury Island and get some free sand.

I followed the directions on the UGS website and got to an area that didn't look very promising. So I started looking around but didn't spend too long doing it because I came upon a group of nudists hanging out in the desert. They were all over the place and didn't feel like poking around too much and ended up digging up in a place that gave me some sand that was MUCH too fine. Here's a photo of what I got:

As you can see it is WAY smaller than what Mark has on his inexpensive reefkeeping post.

Mark, I hope you don't mind me reposting your photo.

So anyway, I think I'll be going back out there next weekend, hopefully I'll find better sand and less naked men.

Does anybody have some directions that are a little more specific than what's listed on the UGS website, or maybe have some sand I could relieve you of?
Thanks,
Mack

Certainly I don't mind you posting that old pic.Smile
Yes that sand is too fine. It appears to be silica sand, or tiny Oolitic. If you have a cell phone, call me next time you go out there. I know that area like the back of my hand. I could navigate it with my eyes closed.LOL

The directions to the best spot for sand are in the thread. Confused Sorry that you didn't see them.

The UGS website is out of date. That sand was taken 5 years ago by Broken Arrow Salt Co for their berms. This (5 year old pic) is what you saw when you arrived, minus the old minivan. The other side of the road, the north side, has plenty of Oolitic sand dunes.Smile

BTW, for anyone that wants Oolitic sand without having to make the long trip out there, I have plenty of it piled up. Just call the number below. Smile
