I bought a Blue tort frag from a LFS a few days ago.  It was about 1 inch long mounted in a plug.  It was blue but I could not or did not see any polyps.  I did notice small bumps that I thought that there would be polyps.  I placed it into my tank along with other sps frags that I have added over the past three weeks.  Those frags are doing great with signs of new growth!  Now, the blue has turned green.  Algae?  Is there any hope?  Comments are welcome.

Fred

May be due to the actinics in your system. Are they 03's. IMO, try to turkey baste the frag and see if there is any algae... probably just in a type of shock.

When I bought mine a few months ago, they both had sort of a green base, but now they have adapted to my tank and are blue as ever.

Yep, they are from ORA, The first pic is the one I got from Eric when he purchased that big order from ORA, The second one I got from Shawn at Aquatica about a month before. One month before the hurricanes.

Its always a gamble when placing new sps frags in your tank. It is not uncommon for them to change intensity or even completely change color. Many times you can buy inexpensive "brown" acros that change colors and become something spectacular in your tank. Then - frag it into another tank and it becomes brown again.
The answer: add more light, and cross your fingers ...

Plus, lots of sps will change color w/ diff K bulbs ... its actually pretty cool .. sometimes i will get 2 of the same frag to see if it will color up different under 20Ks and 14Ks.

Thanks for your comments.  I believe that the blue tort was dead or close to it when I purchased it.  The frag now has a bright green color such as green algae.  My lighting is one 150 DE MH @ 20K and 72 watts of PC.  36 watts of PC are 50/50.  Maybe next time I will be able to get a blue tort for a reasonable price.  This one was $21.99.

I think the easyiest way to tell if it is alive or not is to put it under VHO actinics. All of my corals that have green on them glow under VHO actinics whereas my algea does not. So if it glows it is alive. Granted not all of my corals seem to glow, but all of them with green do.

Also I had an SPS frag that never grew. Granted things were nipping at it. Eventually I lost it under a rock during a move and it died. But it lived for a good 6 months with no growth. (I could tell it was alive because I could see atleast 1 pollop at night).

Up Date....  I told Chad at the Pet Factory that the blue tort that I purchased from him had died and turned green shortly after I had placed it into my tank.  He went out of his way to replace it.  Not every LFS would do the same.  Thanks and kudos to Chad and the Pet Factory!
