My MH bulbs are due to be replaced, and even on sale this weekend, it's over $100 for the two plus shipping.  I've been reading all of the opinions on T5 systems instead of MH, and with summer coming soon the heat issue is more important than the bulb replacement cost for me.

My tank is 48 inches wide, 24 inches high, and 30 inches deep.  Conventional wisdom says I need 10 bulbs for this, but because the overflow cuts 6 inches from the depth in the middle third of the tank, and I don't have anything on either side, I'm thinking 8 bulbs would be enough.  So my options (considering ATI fixtures only at this point) is either one 8x54w powermodule fixture, or two 4x54w sunpower fixtures.

I personally don't need the stainless housing in the powermodule, but ATI doesn't make an 8x54w sunpower fixture.  The sunpowers are less expensive, and running two 4x54w would give me four circuits for simulating sun cycles instead of two.  It would mean getting another PM8 for my apex, but I need some more outlets anyway.

So, any opinions?  I haven't been able to find a picture of the bottom of one of these fixtures anywhere, they're pictures of the top.  I would need to find a way to get my moon lights attached to these, so having two fixtures would allow the moonlights to be placed between them.

Of course, the other option is to just get two new MH bulbs.  LOL

I would definately go t-5's.  You won't have any spots in the tank that are dim!
Just remember you will need to acclimate the corals to all the extra light.

It's all personal preference.  But myself, I enjoy the shimmer effect, and you wont have that with T-5's only.  Why don't you try both?

I say make the switch to T5.

However I would not run the 54 watt versions. Get the ATI Powermodule in the 8x39w version. Then hang it about 8-10 inches above the tank. You will get plenty of spread with it and you will also be able to keep lower light corals on the edges. But if you want clams and SPS all the way to the edges then get the 48" fixture(s).

Don't take the ATI stuff lightly. They are beasts when it comes to putting out light and corals need to adapt to the new lighting.

I love my ATI Sunpower over my tank. Corals have never looked better for me. I had them under MH for about 3 months and never had colors like I do now. My acans are also growing at a crazy rate. I honestly find 2 to 3 babies a week on my one frag/mini colony and I haven't even been feeding them lately.

It is a small investment but one I definitely recommend!

I hadn't thought of using a smaller fixture, but it makes perfect sense!  Thanks Ryan, and everyone else who posted.  Now I need to rethink.  heh heh
