Here are the first two holes just started using a template (shown next). Notice that there is tape on the other side of the glass to prevent any falling glass. I don't think I show the cardboard box/paper towels underneath but make sure to have something to catch any falling glass in case the tape doesn't work.
Here is the template sealed to the tank. I added water into the hole to lubricate the bit while starting the holes.
After starting the holes, I build a little pool of water around the holes using tape. Plumber's putty works well, too. This lubricates the holes while I finish drilling.
NOTE: Duct tape would have been WAY better to use!
All the holes drilled and tape removed. The white powder is actually ground up glass which is fairly easy to clean up.
Everything taped up for painting the back. I applied two generous coats of a satin finish black paint.
Here is the painted and drilled tank as it stands today!
Things that I am doing next:
- Re-silicone the front vertical seams with clear silicone mostly because of preference. (using DAP adhesive made for aquariums from Home Depot)
- Add black acrylic overflow in the back left corner. Since my tank is not very wide, It will most likely be a 5"x5"x24" overflow.
- Leak test and rinse out any leftover vinegar/water solution (used to clean after painting)
- Add RO water/live water, rock/live rock, sand/live sand mixtures!!!!
- Wait............
Here is what I have already gotten
- Tank (60 gal tall: 48"x13"x24") and stand
- Lights (Wavepoint 4x54 watt 48")
- Paint, silicone (DAP for aquariums or GE Silicone I 100% silicone in the white/blue), diamond glass bit for cutting glass (Thanks to Ryan Thompson!)
Here is what I am looking to acquire this week:
- Acrylic piece for overflow
- Bulkheads and caps
- Koralia 3 or Evolution powerheads (x2)
- Live Rock, sand, water
I will also be using a similar method to what Ryan Thompson used for the overflow in this thread (Herbie Method):
I'm not planning on starting the sump business until my water is good and my tank is nice and happy.

Until then, I will just cap the bulkheads and leaver the overflow empty. More to come this week!!
