 Topic: Can i build a sump

Anyone here have any experience or guidance in me adding a sump or refugium for my Red Sea Max 34 gallon? And just in case you had nothing better to do these days, i could always use the help

Don't the Red Sea Max's have an integrated sump in the back of the tank? Are you looking to build something to go under the tank? If so, they're pretty simple. Typical design has three chambers: one for the skimmer, one for the fuge, and then a return pump chamber. The only trick is setting up the baffles between sections that regulate water level. You want to maximize your water volume in the sump, but leave enough room for the sump to fill up if the power goes out.

I drilled the back of Nick801's 34gal rsm, and he built his own sump out of acrylic, you should shoot him a pm and ask for details.

Mines a little ghetto =) sense I built it my self and it was my first acrylic experience ever... but it doesn't leak and it does the job and it has an auto top off =) I think I was only into materials like 60 bucks... your more than welcome to come take a look

I agree it looks great. True ghetto would look like it came from the ghetto and it doesn't. Clean, functional, good glue joints... just what it should be.
In response to the original question, it's not that difficult. I cut my acrylic on a table saw with a plastic blade. A wood blade will chip it and catch it and throw it back at you violently. Once the pieces are cut, scrape the cut edges so they're smooth (remove the melted "burr" on the edges). Fit them together dry first to make sure they fit without any big gaps. I use the thicker Weld-on (#16) because it can fill small gaps and I don't have to "inject it" like the thinner stuff. I put a few pieces of tape on each corner joint to hold it in the right position, then open the joint, fill with glue, close the joint and brace it with a square object so it dries in the the correct position. Then move on to the next joint until you are done and remove the tape when everything is dry. Add more glue later to the inside to fill any gaps if necessary.

what glur do you use for accrilic and where is a good place to get the glue and accrilig what thickness? I did mine out of all glass I HIGHLY recomend NOT doing that it was fun to do for the heck of it but not worth the time it took

The thickness of acrylic depends on the dimensions of the container you're building, and it can get pricey. The best glue to use IMO is weld-on #4 and then to reinforce the critical seams with a small bead of weld-on #16.
