QuoteReplyTopic: Setting up lighting for my new tank. Help Please.. Posted: November 15 2009 at 8:19pm
I just got my new in wall 125g set up, everything but the lighting that is. The tank is 24" deep and I want to be able to grow most every coral. I have a 400 w MH ballast setup and I was thinking of getting 10 or 12k bulbs for them and setting them up in the middle and then running an 60" actinic on both sides of the halides. Is their a better way to do it? I don't necessarily have to do Halides. If solely VHO is the way to go then that is fine. Just wanted some opinions because I am starting from scratch building a diy reflector and setup. My main questions are:
1. How far from the water do the halides be? 2. How far from the water should the VHOs be? 3. My tank is 6' long, should I use 5' VHO bulbs? 4. What are the best MH/VHO bulbs for the money?
I'm way excited to be back in the hobby and have killed enough fish and coral in past tanks to have PETA lock me up. Just trying to do it right from the start. Thanks Mark Peterson for your post on how to set up a tank from scratch. I went out west and got tons of Utah rock and sand, great success.
Thanks for any input, I will post pics as soon as I get it done.
I would use your MH's with a couple of these reflectors very good price for what you get depending on the bulb you go with you may or may not need to supplement if you do I would use 2 t5 uvl super actinics
Honestly you could go either way. T'5's will grow most anything you want and the corals will have awesome color with the right placement, however they don't produce near the shimmer effect that MH's do. So with this one it's mostly personal preference. I use T'5's as does Keith, Ryan, and Dion also uses T5's on his 225.
