Topic: Rough sketch for 120 Posted: June 25 2009 at 5:23pm |
Here's a rough sketch of what I want to do in the new house. A very rough sketch. The fountains will be flush with the sides of the stand, I don't know why I didn't sketch it like that.
The fountains will either be deep sand beds/holding cells for bad fishies, or refugiums. The frames will be made with stainless steel and have acrylic inserts for the mini-tanks. Also, they'll help keep the water cool. They'll be plumbed to the sump on a separate loop from the main return, then have a closed loop/small pump for the fountain itself. Not sure if I want to go with the slab of slate style or if I want to do some sort of stainless steel design. On that subject, does anyone think slate (or stainless steel) would have any harmful effects to the tank?

Thanks. I've yet to get approval from the fiance, but I think I can pull it off. :)

It might make it tough to work on the tank too.

You may grow algae on the fountains- is that what you want?

I wasn't too worried about it if I did, just scrape it off and collect any pods or other creatures that might grow in it, so it would double as an ATS.

I had pieces of slate in my saltwater tank for a long time. I think that's safe. I think stainless steel will still corrode in saltwater just not really fast. Maybe that's not a big problem either for this kind of thing, but isn't that why pumps often use ceramic and or titanium shafts?

the waterfalls would act as a built in turf scrubber. if algae grew on them it would be very beneficial to the system and refugeum. i would probably use black acrylic. cut some intresting "wavy" shapes and alternate them the entire way down. remember not to make them too big or the water will leave the waterfall and freefall to the bottom.

Ahh.. Black acrylic, now that's a good idea. Wavy though, I'm not sure of.. I'll have to think about that one. I kind of wanted slate because our tile is a slate replica, so I wanted it to match that, but I do like the idea of black acrylic. Much easier to cut. Haha. Black acrylic with some white LEDs drilled in where the supports would be so the acrylic is illuminated from the inside.. I like that idea.
I was thinking maybe 72" for the total height of the fountains, but I'm not sure.
