I bought a Euroreef skimmer from joelamb7467 with the tank setup.  I was in my kitchen trying to clean it up a bit and had it standing on my stove head first, reached over for some vinegar and it tipped off and hit the tile... Long story short: I can get to the inside to clean it much easier now because the whole thing broke in half in the middle of the skim tube.  It fits together again like a jigsaw piece.

Can I glue and silicone this back together or is it a lost cause?

I'd glue it with weldon #4 or so.  Then go over it again with #16.  Should be good as new.

I don't believe it is acrylic so weld-on may not work. Or maybe it's ASM skimmers that are not acrylic...

The hobby stores have a model glue/solvent that melts many plastics like crazy. Basically you can place it all together then brush the solvent on the cracks. The solvent will seep into the gaps between the cracks and partially melt the plastic so when it's softened in about 20 seconds a little pressure  like maybe a large elastic band around the tube will squeeze it together to make it set up water tight. Any gaps not fully formed together can be siliconed. Let me go look at the bottle...

It's Testor brand and it contains Methyl Ethyl Ketone and a little brush in the cap. I think this one t cost about $2 at Ace Hardware. I always test a plastic to be sure it will work by brushing a small amount on the plastic, waiting a few seconds and seeing if I can scratch off some softened plastic with my fingernail. If it doesn't scratch then it needs a different kind of glue. I believe that it is the right stuff, but you could take a piece of the plastic into the hobby store and test it before you buy it.Smile

Now you can pay for WMAS membership because this MB just saved you alota green, and grief. Wink

the EuroReef skimmers are acrylic ... the ASM are molded plastic ..

I agree with Mark ... the board saved you about 900 bucks! .. a WMAS membership is a fraction of that .. Embarrassed

if you go to the quick link in the blue box on the left side of the screen there is a WMAS Store link.  You can purchase it through there.  I tired but for some reason my Paypal account has been temporarily locked with an amount of $0.00   I have know idea why maybe it's lack of use.   Is there another way to get membership?  Can I mail a check somewhere of something?

ASM are made of extruded Acrylic and Euroreefs are from cast acrylic which  weld-on products will work on both.

Just buy a 2009 membership at the next meeting.  Don't worry about it for now.

Thanks Eric. I never thought of it before, maybe that little bottle I have will mend acrylic too. What is the active ingredient in Weld-on?
