Topic: Feed Corals Posted: October 20 2008 at 1:06pm |
I am surprised by the different types of corals and their feeding habits.
I am just wondering what corals eat and what chemicals are essential for them
I periodically dose
calcium
iodine
strontium (sp)
This is what I have
duncan - mysis and brine
Yellow sun coral - mysis and brine
Hammer - ?
Frogspawn - ?
Zoos - ?
palys - ?
mushrooms - ?
Feathers - ?
polisipora - ?
Torches - ?
galaxea - ?
candy canes - ?
green star polyps - ?
clove polyps - ?
gorgonian - ?
All my corals seem to be doing very good, are healthy good color and growing.
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions
Thanks

I have a fuge and DSB. I haven't fed corals directly for a long time. I do sometimes add Reef Plus.

Candy cane will take little bits of Meat, Most all the stuff you list are Photosynthetic. However, I know there are some corals which feed on both.
Oyster eggs, And smaller meats will help. (baby brine, Cyclopese).
I use all the above in a mix. And I dose Kent Coral Vite, And Zoo plex.

The only coral you have that needs to be fed is the Sun Polyps. The rest are photosynthetic. The Featherduster worm is a filter feeder.

My $0.02
I would make sure you feed the Sun Polyps, the rest will probably do fine without feedings, but it certainly doesn't hurt to feed them. Usually any type of raw meaty seafood (crab, shrimp, clam, mussels, etc., etc.) will work well (chopped to the appropriate size of the polyp).
As far as chemicals:
I would test and maintain:
Alkalinity
Calcium
pH
I would periodically test magnesium.
With periodic water changes I don't really worry about anything else. I think you will often times do more damage then good with many of the additives on the market.

Oh, and you may need to feed the gorgonian depending on the type.
