Topic: Mantis Shrimp Posted: October 04 2008 at 4:55pm |
I just had to share this picture I just took of the mantis shrimp that is killing all of the snails in my tank. I am determined to get that thing out of my tank. Sorry the picture is blurry, I took it with my cell phone.

That's great Deb! Can you remove the rock with him still inside it?

It is a base rock and I would have to remove 4 other rocks, but that is what I may end up doing. Just knowing it is in there is driving me crazy for some reason. (couldn't be that I can't have any snails in my tank )

He's a good looking one though. I say keep him, they only kill fish, snails, crabs, and will whack the crap out of you if you go head to head with them. Apart from that they are very reef friendly.

I just read about these a few days ago, and said to myself I hope I never have to deal with one of these. I am sorry, hope it all works out. Maybe someone will want him

Oh.... Jeff wants him. (don't ask me why).. He had him in a tank by himself then added rock to cure it. When I set up my 75 I added that rock. We hadn't seen him for a while and even tried feeding him but he didn't come out. Jeff checked all the rocks as we put them in my tank and left the rock that we had usually seen him in, in the tank. We thought maybe he had died because we couldn't find him. Well, about two days after setting up the 75 I saw him peeking out of a rock. Jeff teases me and says I "stole" him. Hopefully I can catch him and put him back in his own little tank.
Thanks everyone.

If you keep it there and don't have the money or the heart to keep adding snails to feed it, a returning algae problem will be the eventual outcome.
You can trap it with various traps. I would highly recommend removing it ASAP, even if you have to remove that rock.

I GOT HIM!! I was looking at my tank this morning and saw him hanging upside down in a rock. The rock only had one other rock resting on it so I removed the rock. I took the rock and put it into a little holding tank we have set up and within seconds the shrimp came swimming out of the rock. I took the rock out and put it back in me tank. Now we are going to set up a little tank just for the shrimp. I am so happy, now my tank can have snails and crabs and peppermint shrimp and little fish and.......

Cool! There is a little green mantis at Marine Aquatics. He is so little and cute. I think I might get him & he can live in a sump.
