nope, I don't think that it is possible, I read once where I think that it was calfo was getting skimate from a tank with just calurpa? in it, I don't remember the details but I have to agree with him.

I have potential little babies running around. And tons of other live food.
I think it might be possible that you can over skim.
I turn mine off from 7pm to 2am just in case.
I'm still undecided.

Yes, I think it might be possible, but unless you're running something like an ORCA 250 or a medium ATB on a 55 gallon tank, I'd tend to think it's a remote possibility.
Having written that, there are many out there that don't use a skimmer, arguing that it skims out beneficial stuff. I doubt it's been researched or proven either way, so do what you wish, IMHO. Skimming is anecdotally shown to help tanks that might be subject to neglect.

Thanks guys, I was having some issues w/ my skimmer pulling the air that it needed. So, I hooked up a couple of aip pumps to it , and now I'm getting a full cup a day. Just wanted to make sure that was okay.... BTW it's a 90.

My opinion on this subject has went back and forth. There are some tanks that run quite well without skimmers, but I think skimmers are a worthwhile investment for large tanks (55 and larger) and I would recommend skimming 24/7.

I don't think you can overskim.
Even the cleanest of reef tanks still have far higher nutrient levels than natural reefs. And as Jake would tell you, you can always add more food, but you can't always pull out more waste. So when in doubt, skim it out.

Thanks to Adam's advice, I am going to be running 2 AMS G-2 skimmers on my 120.... I dont think you can ever have your water too clean.......

ok .. here is my opinion ....
if you are running a SPS tank .. than no .. you can not over skim ...
if you are running a softy tank .. than yes it is possible to over skim however unlikely....

But yeah I second his thoughts, in my 125 full of softies, they do better when I don't skim, or skim very little, since my skimmer occasionally pulls crap out, but not very often.

I tend to agree with this. I think softys kind of like a little bit dirty water. Like xenia's and such. That's why they will thrive in some really dirty areas of the reefs. I like fish so I know I will do a little overstocking of my 92 gallon but thats why I decided to not mess around and use a ASM G-3.

What kind of skimmer, and is it all stock or modded (meshmod, gate valve, etc)?

I underskim; but I have a bunch of mangroves and I really like algae.
I have both softies and stonies also.
I couldn't say that I don't have problems; you should see my bubble algae. But on that note, (it's odd) I'm actually starting to not be bothered by it.
All in all, I'm happy with the growth. I really think my stonies are doing well, except when they are picked at by the fish. I have always liked the fish more anyway, but I like providing them with a happy coral home. Maybe that is why I lean towards softies and algae.
I'm still a newb, maybe I'll change my mind tomorrow.

Hey Bob, It's A cheap-a** skimmer, I couldn't even tell you the name.(hence the issues w/ it) But, I've modded 8 ways from Sunday , and this is the best result I've had. I just attached your run of the mill air pumps, and the result as far as I call tell , is what it should be. The skimmer is rated for 125.(which is what I was told when I bought it) But,I paid $50 for it, And that was before I knew anything. So, with that being said, it's a cheapy ,and it should prob. only be on a 55.

I get about the same skimmate from 24/7 as on the timer. This is three days worth at 24/7.
Maybe I could have prevented some of the bubble algae in the past by keeping the skimmer on 24/7. But now my tank is looking dry and I'm putting the skimmer back on the timer.

I use phosphate remover and AC for 3-4 days every month to month and a half. About every 3 months I'll do a 20 gallon water change. I know I could have cleaner water but the tank seems to be at its best when it's dirty, the downside being that it comes with bubble algae and sometimes slime algae. I guess I'm just trying to find a balance. I'm trying to let macro algae and mangroves do the work for me because I can be lazy. If I wanted to pull it all apart I could clean up the rocks. I should have quarantined.
