Topic: Is this normal? Posted: May 29 2004 at 10:47am |

We noticed this this morning along the top edge of the tank. There are several snails around but I can't see one directly responsible for the white squiggles.
Anyone else have this?
Thanks!

Those are probably Cerith Snail eggs. And I see two small round egg cases nearby. They might be Astrea snail eggs. The Cerith are more likely to survive, unless you have a lot of hungry hermit crabs.
Congrats

I just did a search and it does look like cerith eggs. Funny thing is that I thought I only had one cerith snail. Are they asexual reproducers?

No. But they are hermaphrodites.

Perigrinus, that would be the Margarita Snails. Were they playing piggyback with each other? I have raised hundreds of those babies to adult.
Cerith snails can easily come in mistaken for a hermit crab because hermits prefer to occupy Cerith shells.

I have 5 cerith's in my tank. They mate like bunnies, but more frequently. I get about 3 batches of those eggs per week. I currently have hundreds of babies in the corners and on the glass. If they all make it to adulthood and continue on this break neck pace, they'll be funding my trip to Europe.

Yes they don't have to be next to each other. They release sperm and eggs from wherever they happen to be when the pheremones flip the switch. (I don't know if the chemicals are called pheremones in water.)
I had about 75 in a 75 gal so they did this piggyback thing in order to get to the highest spot on a rock so that they got maximum broadcast of their seed. There were some stack of 4 snails high!
The way first I noticed it was one evening as I glanced at my tank it had very milky white water. I immediately suspected a problem, but then, like you, I saw the snails periodically spewing little white clouds. Sex in the glow of aquarium lights...ahhh...
