Topic: Skimmer comparisons Posted: May 13 2004 at 1:02pm |
What makes one better than another? I have 80 gallon tank with a 30 gallon overflow. I am getting cloudy/ dirty water. I am assuming it is time to skim
Is there any "cheep" skimmers that work? What is a good afordable way to do this?

I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.

Skyetone, skimming is not rocket science . IMO, look for a skimmer that produces lots of very small bubbles. I like to move about 5 times my system water volume per hour through a skimmer, others may suggest more or less. And finally the thing many people don't usually mention, look for one that is easy to adjust and clean. Dirty skimmers don't work very well.
You're a diyer, have you looked through the DIY section here and at other reefing message boards? There's lots of ideas ranging from very elaborate to very simplistic.

I know that if I'm wrong on this I will be corrected but I don't think that cloudy water is indicative of protiens being present. Is it a green cloudy or brown cloudy? I've found that a little mechanical filtration can clear up water pretty quick if done correctly and I personally only run that kind of filtration when I am trying to clear up cloudy water, not on a regular basis. That being said I believe we've had a bit of a discussion on the pros and cons of skimming but I personally prefer skimming.

BHaight is right on target. We need to know more about Skyetones "cloudy/dirty" water to make a proper diagnosis and to suggest the correct remedy.

it isn't cloudy per say. It is just kinda like green water is to a fresh water tank. Not bad, but just not clear. I am not overfeeding and I don't feel I am overly populated. I just think the water could look clearer. Yea mech. filters are an idea.

na, my over-the-top pump is running some LS in a bucket. I might throw some in this week to see if the green goes away. I had some cotton refillable puches trying to hold my caulrpa back in the sump, they got nasty quick, so I took them out and never put them back... Hmmm.... temp mech is an easy way out...

Sky I had the same thing with my tank then I saw a sock on someones tank you can get them from just about any LFS I got mine from Aquatic Dreams like $7 Works like a charm for new tanks. You just put it in your sump on the incoming line and wash it once a week. Gets rid of all sorts of junk. Mine is great for catching baby snails that wash up down the overflow. Just my .02
