 Topic: R/O Holding tank issues...

I bought an R/O system from Dnellens a bit ago. I Hooked it all up and it is working great, I used his old 30 or so gallon rubbermaid Garbage can with a float valve on top as a holding tank.
Since I dont have the 110 up and running yet, The can full of water has only been being used a bit at a time for water changes on the other tanks. So it has been sitting for about three weeks.
Today I ran it dry and pulled the pump out and the pump and can are covered in a clear odorless slime. Just enough to notice when you touch it, but Otherwise you wouldnt know it is there.
Is this normal, and should I be adding something to the storage bin to prevent this and keep the water ready to go in the tank at any time.
I was also considering using the Stored water as drinking water since I have seen what is in my tapwater now, So I do want the water 100% clean.

you should keep a lit on it. It's the stuff floating in your air settling on the water.

I had a slight slime in my RO/DI water holding tank too if I let it sit for more then a month or so. Even with a lid. Assuming the slime was a bacteria, I never could figure out where they were getting their nutrition to survive. I don't think it ever effected my tank, but I don't think I'd drink it.

Have you checked the TDS of the RO water? Did the guy that you bought the RO from change the filters and membranes? And was there a lid on it to begin with?

Yes there was a lid. Just the standard lid that comes with the garbage can.
I have checked the TDS, it is about 10... Time to do a filter change but as I see it it's way better than the 480 in my tapwater!

I have also noticed a slime in my ro water tank, I believe that the only way to prevent it would be to keep it airtight, I have not figured out a way to achieve that yet.

Add about a tablespoon of chlorine bleach and let it sit for a day. It causes no problems and the dead bacteria is little problem, especially if it stays on the surfaces as the water is used. Periodic cleaning of the container with leftover RO water and a few drops of dishwashing soap is a good idea too.
