Topic: Help Green Star Polyps spreading fast Posted: December 10 2007 at 2:12pm |
|
I have a very healthy colony of Green Star Polyps...the only problem is that they are starting to spread to areas I do not want them to go...
What is the best way to remove the creep that has begun to form on some of the other rocks?

Isolation is the only solution, you need to make sure the rock they're growing on isn't touching any other rocks... and then when they start to cross the sand between rocks, peel them back... In my opinion they're next to impossible to control, but good luck, they're a very cool coral!

Isolation ONLY works if the mother colony does not start dropping polyps into the water column that find a new home elsewhere in the rock work. I now have them growing in 3 new areas from the single frag I had.

Or you could let the new ones grow a little bit then bring them to the frag meeting

Some people put a small rock in their growing path and let them grow on the new rock. Then pull the new rock out the the GSP attached and sell it.

Mine grew like crazy under VHO's. I was selling it almost monthly. Might as well make your hobby a little more self sustaining. Good luck!

Thank you so much for all the positive feedback. I have enjoyed being a (mostly reader) of this site for so long and I love all the helpful people.
I think I will have to get some rubble rocks and start fragging pieces out. So hopefully in the near future I will have a post of a different nature.

My GSP were doing great in my sump but when I moved them up into the tank they haven't polyped out once! Go figure, I would only imagine that there is to much light up in the main tank.

Star polyps are pretty easy to control by removal. I like to take a pair of tweezers with sharp tips and work under the mat. Once you get the mat starting to peel up you can easily remove large sections. Star polyps are pretty easy to glue onto rubble with super glue when compared to other soft coral.
GSP removal usually becomes a preventive maintenance task once they cover the area you want them to. It is one of the corals I frag frequently to keep under control.
Thanks,
Scott
