Topic: 65w Fuge Light Y Cheato Grows SO Well Posted: November 08 2007 at 8:32pm |
OK -
So yesterday I when I got up my fuge light was off... I thought that unusual because it is usually on except for between 2 - 8 PM... But, I kind of figured maybe someone unplugged the timer (that has happened before)
Anyway, when I got home last night it still wasn't on. I thought maybe the bulb went; but, when I took it apart I could see a transistor on the board had blown.
So, today went to HD to get a new '27w Lights of America' fixture.
When I got to the aisle I realized I didn't own a 27w light.
I had the 65w version. SO I bought another 65w fixture for $40...
Well, I am thinking that this explains (at least partially) why my Cheato grows like nuts... but when someone puts some in thier fuge it doesn't grow nearly as fast. I have ALOT more light on my fuge than most people.
I know Mike S. has the 27w version... he posted a pic awhile back for somebody else. I thought mine was the same because it looked the same as the picture. In person, however, the 65w fixture is twice the size of the 27w fixture, but the same shape and color, etc.
So I can say now that if you need a fuge light that grows macro like crazy, get the 65w Lights of America fixture from HD. For $15 more than the 27w version (that one was $26) you get more than twice the output (same 6.5K temp rating on the bulb - just a bigger bulb)...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, that was my "revelation" for today (that and some cool algae I found in a Health Food store in AF... more on that on a different topic thread )

I think Suzy uses the 65 watt fixture too.

It is a porch light with a 4 tube compact flourescent bulb. The bulb temperature is 6500K so it grows algae well.

I ought to get one of these to supplement the 250 watt 14K MH over my sump... Maybe I can get some decent growth down there then...

They are not bad and certainly more energy efficient than an incandescent set up... HOWEVER...
Both melevs bulbs are "75 watt equivalent" 16w bulbs... meaning the output is comparable to 75w of incandescent lighting.
Mike, If I remember correctly the 27w Lights of America unit that you have is a "250w equivalent" 27w bulb - you get 3.33 more "equivalent" light from your fixture than one of the melev bulbs
In my case, my light is a "500w equivalent" 65w bulb. You would need to hang 6.66 of those melev bulbs over my fuge to get the same output.
Now, with the built in reflector on that one "spotlight" version, maybe the difference is a little less - so maybe just 2 of those bulbs to equal yours and 4 of them to equal mine.
But (IMO) if I needed 4 of them to duplicate what I am getting now then there is no real reason (costwise, aesthetically, etc.) for me to switch...
Or am I missing something???

Anybody have any reflective aluminum laying around? I would
really like to make a new back for my LoA light so it is actually
refective instead of just white. I have an old one from the side
of my house that died that I can use for a template.
