Topic: Plumbing my 90g tonight Posted: October 04 2007 at 12:33pm |

hey, my pump just showed up, so I'm going to be plumbing my tank tonight. Anyone have some tips or tricks for me? Things to watch out for? Thanks.

You aren't going to the meeting?
Don't plug in the pump until the plumbing is done. Measure twice, cut once.

Much more fun than plumbing a tank.

Make sure you have unions in the right places.

yes, i dry fit all the pipes together before i glued anything. i left two sections right below the bulkheads unglued so that i could move the tank and stand into the house. I will glue those when i have them in place. How long should i let the glue dry before i add water?
I have unions on each end of my sump. I wanted to put one more on the return line after my pump, but i got a threaded union on accident. I'll have to go get the right union and maybe cut the line and put it in. If not today, then when the pump goes out.
I put two valves between the bulkheads in my tank and the pump/union so that i can shut off the water flow if i ever need to remove the pump/sump.
The return hole in the sump didn't lineup perfectly with the pump. I thought that i can either raise the pump or use two 45o angles to bring the line down to the pump. I didn't think this would make a big difference in my gph, because that inlet to the pump is 1" pvc and the outlet is 3/4". So, i figure the only disadvantage is that extra 10" of head.

Let the glue dry for an hour and you will be fine.
I would just use two 45o angles on the pump line.

yeah, i went with the two 45s. it worked out nice because it moved my pump to the back right corner leaving a large area for more stuff! maybe a UV sterilizer.

sorry for the ****ty pictures.
I made some mistakes that i plan on fixing.
1 - I'm going to move the pump into the sump because it is way too loud. 2 - I'm going to put a union on the return for easy change in the future. 3 - Raise sump up 1/4 of an inch and put rubber feet under it to reduce noise and allow water to evaporate. 4 - Some wire management would make it look nice.

The stand and the tank look great! It looks a little shy on rock for me though.

This is perhaps philosophical rather than practical since we're only talking about a couple feet of pipe with 2 or so fittings, but I remember learning that two 45's have less resistance than even a single 90 degree elbow. The wider curve creates less turbulence.
This may not have worked depending on the geometry, but in the drain you may have been able to use 2 45's instead of two 90 elbows.
I think your plumbing looks great, I'm just musing about plumbing optimization as I think about my next tank.

I agree 45s are better but it looks like there was a problem with space here.
