40 gallon overflow

I'm thinking of downsizing from 100 to 40 gallons. Petco has that $1 per gallon sale going on. The tank is not drilled, but I want to put in an internal overflow. Here's my questions:
 
-How big does the overflow need to be?
 
-What size bulkheads should I use for supply and return if I only want one overflow?
 
It seems like 1" bulkheads are pretty standard, but that's usually for larger aquariums. Just wondering if I should use a smaller size for a 40 gallon.

The overflow needs to have enough overflow area to handle the amount of flow your pump delivers. It does not need to go to the bottom of the tank unless then bottom of the tank is where it is drilled. Many tanks have tempered bottoms that can't be drilled. There is a huge flow difference between 3/4" and 1" pipe. I would still use a 1" bulkhead for the drain and 3/4" for the return.
