I know there are a lot of Damsel haters out there, so I may be crazy to even ask this question but here it goes anyway...

I'm thinking about getting a blue and gold damsel (or are they called yellowtail)

I currently have a 29 gallon with two Ocellaris Clowns, Yellow Clown Goby, Diamond Goby, and Purple Firegish.  I'd really like to add one more fish that is active and brightly colored (I like the blue damsel because I don't have anything thats blue in my tank).

Will the Damsel kill my other fish, or do you think one would be alright (you probably should know that my Clowns killed the two chromis that I tried to introduce, so I think the damsel may get picked on by them)

Any thoughts would be appreciated...  Also if you have a cool small fish you think I should consider, let me know!

Thanks,

Tim

I've got a pair of ocellaris clowns and a yellow tailed blue devil damsel in the same tank. and i think my female clown has a crush on the damsel.

Mike,

If I started with a really small one, do you think that would help with the firefish, or is he doomed regardless?  (The firefish is my favorite, so I really don't want to condem him...)

Damsels are aggressive, Firefish are shy and easily bullied. The smaller the tank the more aggressive a fish can become. I don't think I would try it or atleast I would be ready to tear the tank apart to get the damsel out if it didn't work. Since the Firefish was established first it might work.

The only times I've ever had a serious problem with damsels is after they are pretty big and you add a new fish. This really seems to upset them.

I picked up a kupang damsel last week from Aquatica and so far he's done very well.  He just sits in the middle of my tank and doesn't move much.  I purposely chose one that's smaller than the rest of my fish. I think they're a real problem when you add them first.  Tank size may also have an effect.  Mines a 120g and he has plenty of room to keep to himself.  While at Aquatica I spent nearly half an hour watching the tank with the damsels and took note of the few that were acting very aggressive towards thier conspecifics.  I then chose one of the few that didn't seem to be acting aggressively.  Just my 2 cents.Smile
